Leafs get Versteeg from Chicago, per LeBrun.
Details:
Leafs get Versteeg and the rights to winger Bill Sweatt in exchange for forwards Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis

Can we change the title to "Sabres news, page 2 of thread, you'll be disappointed" in advance?

No idea what to think about this one really.
Leafs get better now, as Versteeg immediately plops into their top 6. Sweatt was a 2nd round pick back in the day and has a ton of wheels...
Then again, Stalberg seems really talented.
Seems like a solid deal for both sides.

Good. Stalberg seemed to have Miller's number: three goals in four games against him.

Dammit. Now I can't like Versteeg anymore. Stupid Leafs.

I think what you meant to say is "Why couldn't Buffalo get Stan Bowman"?
He's done really well for a guy who was about to be *****slapped by the salary cap.

Yeah, agreed. Stan's done a heck of a job getting a few nice pieces for guys that he just HAD to move.

Nothing like stupid free agent signings (Huet/Campbell) forcing a team (Chicago) to trade away key young players (Byfuglien and Versteeg so far).

I agree with this assessment. Stalberg is a cheap replacement for Versteeg in the Chicago lineup while Toronto gets an upgrade in their top six. Sweatt, Didomenico, and Paradis all are prospects without a high upside, so they don't affect this deal too much. Good deal.

At least the Huet signing was defensible. Khabby was coming off a completely horrid year and there wasn't much hope in the pipeline...Niemi's been a bit of a late bloomer (only broke out in 2008 at the age of 24), so there wasn't any "heir apparent" in the system for Khabby. Huet was coming off a solid end to the previous season and finally looked the part of a comfortable #1. Whoops.
The Campbell signing was pure luxury. The Hawks still had Keith, Seabrook and Barker coming up...and all were billed as can't miss. I'm STILL unsure as to the logic of that signing.

For sure.
Toronto is definitely getting the best player in the deal, but Stalberg's no slouch and I think DiDomenico will be a good player in the league pretty soon.

Another Kings source says Paul Martin to Kings is "very" possible.
If LA gets Martin, does that mean Jack Johnson is on his way out?
Depending on what the Sabres would have to give up, I wouldn't be against picking up JJ.
Even if I think he plays way better for Team USA than in an NHL sweater.....

These are the days I kind of wish we had a GM like Brian Burke.
He isn't always making the best moves sin the world, but you can't fault a guy for looking over his roster, and doing what he needs to do to try and improve his hockey team.
99% positive we won't have anything to be excited about this afternoon, because Twiddle Dumb at HSBC won't make any significant moves all off-season.

T-5 hours until we sign Carlo Colaiacovo to the second biggest UFA contract--behind only Spacek--given out by the Sabres since the lockout.
