At this point the chance that he signs with LAK is like 99.999%. I mean I can't see any other reason for him to go to LA other than to hammer out the last few details.

i will make the following bold prediction with 100% confidence.

we will ultimately know the final status and resolution of Kovy before we learn what the final status of DP will be.

although this story has more legs than The Simpsons and nobody wants to see it end - I believe this is the last step.

I've always felt LA is where he'll end up and I think this will be settled, with certainty, shortly.

I cannot fathom NJ offering a 17 year deal, regardless of circumventing the spirit of the CBA (assuming the NHL allows it) for cap reasons, not for Kovalchuk - no way.
HOWEVER.

Kovy to LA makes too much sense for it not to happen, I believe for less money than what NJ would have to pay and much less than what it would cost the NYI.

Kovy-LA (at the right price) would be a great move for both the player and the team.

On a separate note, If I were Kovy, I'd embrace a 3-4 year deal for the right situation. He would make HUGE dollars per year and have another HUGE contract by the end - he'd be still young enough to warrant one, assuming he plays well and stays healthy.

With a face-to-face, I find it hard to believe they won't work something out. From an outsiders perspective, Lombardi played this pretty well. As in, he'll get his man without busting their cap structure. I suppose anything could still happen, but he's stuck to his guns to this point, can't imagine him suddenly backing down now.

Asked tonight about Ilya Kovalchuk, Garth Snow said, "We'll see." Did not shoot it down. Don't shoot the messenger.

Something in his closet?

I've been checking in with this thread on and off for a while.

Maybe I missed a discussion about this, maybe I didn't.

Perhaps I.K. has something in his closet?
Something...some rumor about him...that the GMs might have heard, something that is keeping them from being more aggressive about signing him.

Just a thought....

That something in his closet, is his ego. I don't blame him for wanting to make the right decision for his career and family, but he should have signed with the Devils or Kings already, if winning and being paid well was his priority.

If he signs with the Kings, Kovi will have saved the Devils big time.

if you started a thread called "what's in kovalchuk's closet" I suspect you would get 1000 posts and some interesting ideas. that may be a better way (more fun, at least) to spend time talking hockey in July than the crap we've seen from the twitsphere to date!

Volleyball or surfing?

Is his agent telling everyone one group is willing to spend more than the other to get him in swim trunks?

BREAKING NEWS!!
Lombardi out! Kovy to be new GM of Kings!

But seriously this is really getting annoying. Inform us if he signs with a team. Stop updating us about everything he is doing. This is ridiculous.

It ain't happening. By now, the Isles would have given him an offer. No reason not too. Garth is just trying to make it look like the Isles can roll with the big boys and be interested in big FA's. Truth is, I'd be surprised if Kovy and the Isles ever had contact.

Shame on Garth for thinking he's Mr. Suave egging on the media. The fans deserve so much better from this organization, from the top on down.

Good luck in LA Kovy, and take your "well see" and shove it, Garth. Mr. Underrated 2010.

My ballsack.

After watching this for awhile, Kovy and the rest of the free agents this year have to realize that GM's just aren't ponying up contracts like they have in the past. Look at the free agent tracker..... no signings that are of any significance since July 7th. Say what you want about other free agents waiting for Kovy to set the price... but I believe alot of NHL players looking to score big here are going to be really disappointed.

Again just another perspective from a guy who doesn't believe the Kovy hoopla is worthy at this point.

7.25m for whatever length is what he is worth in this market and due to past signings of higher quality players.

I think its the other way around. The media egged on Garth. He even said it himself "If I didn't make the calls, I wouldn't be doing my job." He also said they were "preliminary calls" and then all of a sudden nhl posted up "three teams in the race for Kovy" He was being vague and confusing of course, but none of it seemed serious to me. I agree the fans deserve a lot, but he also said he never wanted to disrupt his young core. I feel like a huge signing would go against his word.

This is probably how it came down - my only reason for thinking otherwise was the lack of any other notable signings. Was Snow handcuffed because he thought he was in the hunt for Kovy? Happened big-time to the Oilers with Heatley.

Good point. Maybe he can still make a splash or two, nothing as big as Kovy, but something to help push the rebuild for this young team.

I may be naive, but I still think we got a shot here. The longer this goes, the better for the Isles IMO.

I wonder if that "preliminary" phone call by Snow went something like, "If you don't like where you end up with NJ and LA, give me a call"?

I've got a feeling that the delay is more to do with other player movement (Trades)
Kovy is not coming to the Isles but depending on where he lands, other trades will come into play.

I think until they sort themselves out it will play on. Kovy should have been signed by now, the numbers won't change much and probably not even the length, I just think that his cap hit will require other player movements and the Isles may be this team.
