Leighton Re-signed 2 years/3.1M ($1.55 mill cap hit)

The Philadelphia Flyers appear to be going with a familiar face as their No. 1 netminder next season, as the club has signed Michael Leighton to a two-year, $3.1 million contract. The signing locks up three goalies in the Flyers' depth chart, with Brian Boucher on board for 2010-11 and Johan Backlund recently signing a two-year deal.

He better not be the starter.

I have no issues with this as long as long as we still bring in someone else. I really hope that's the case.

Leighton is fine if he's the backup and they ****can Boucher (rough for him), but there still is NO reason to use up a contract on Leighton today. You have a backup under contract and there are better goalies (who will not be that expensive in this market) out there. Why reduce your flexibility now?

EDIT: I will add, last year we saw goalies get the complete shaft on the market... yet we don't learn from that. Just amazing.

Not again. Not again. Why? Why can't the Flyers ever go for it? I'm of the opinion that when the Flyers decided to not make a move at the deadline last year was a sign of surrender. They gave up on the season and were very surprised when they went on their magical run. You need competent goaltending to win and Michael Leighton doesn't seem to be good enough to be a starter for a full season and into the playoffs. This is a confusing move if he's meant to be a starter next year.

I'm disappointed at the length and the money. If he's the backup.

If he's being considered for the starter role then fml.

Hopefully that mean's Boucher is gone. Can they just waive Bouch and if no one wants him let him go down to the minors?

Like I said before: This better be that all the No. 1 goalies we've been working for have zero interest in being a Flyer.

I'll play Devils advocate though. The team likes playing in front of him and if he plays like he did last year than this is a good value for him. Maybe he'll start to break out (8 years late, I know) and become a decent goaltender.

Maybe this could be trade bait? A goalie signed at a fairly low cap-hit that went to the cup the year prior.

Doubt it, but we can hope.

June has basically been epic fail from start to finish for the Flyers organization.

Yes, but we really don't want him in the AHL because we have Backlund and Bob to develop.

I can understand that. I'm still hoping when it's all said in done, we will have someone else in here and we will end up with a starter with Leighton as the backup for a fairly cheap price.

I'd rather have Boosh for cheap. $1.55 mil seems like a lot for a backup, which means he's either going to be the starter or they're getting somebody else who's mediocre to compete. This sucks.

...ya know, it isn't like we haven't see Leighton play before. It isn't like we didn't watch him give up one of the worst goals I've ever seen scored (regardless of level) to lose in OT of Game 6 of the SCF.

He had 6 chances against Chicago - he got pulled twice and gave Kane a double dip cone out of the Mr. Softie truck in another.

I don't mind him as the backup....but I have the bad feeling he's not the backup.

Pannacio:

tpanotch Even w/Leighton re-signed, the Flyers will still look at GT tomorrow I am told, hoping someone lowers their price
