I think in Staals case the longer the term the higher the salary.

6 years at 4 million per ?

well in comparison to what

reddens contract ? then its a steal

NY has the cap space for a 4 million dollar hit, but it will crimp making a later move (unless the WADE is WAIVED)

waive the wade

For a 6 year deal I'd offer 30M. I have no problem with us locking him up for the rest of his 20s. He's certainly worth Rozsival money imo, and he's only going to get better.

And if Wade needs to be sent down to get the deal done I'm fine with that.

Actually I think that this is the best move possible-from a business standpoint. Orr is asking too much for Staals services-so let an offer come across from another club. This will 1) establish a fair market value for Staal 2) It will evidently be less than what Orr is proposing and 3) It lets Slats sign Staal for the matching offer-taking him out of the negotiation process of airing dirty laundry and hurt feelings. I have no problem in letting the process run its course.
Smart move by Slats.
Too bad other GM's don't read between the lines.

It's a good strategy until someone offers him 6 years 36M. I'd rather have Staal than a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd...and matching that deal probably costs us an extra $1M/year.

I'm certain the Rangers would pay him 4.5M.

Actually I don't see Staal being offered that kind of money. Granted he is on the shut down line and he has performed admirably but to consider him 6M range-there would have to be more to his game than just D. The offense he has demonstrated leaves alot to be desired to be considered worthy of 6M. He was a 1st rounder-so getting two more prospects 2nd and 3rd might be worth the letting go,especially at 6M.

6 years, not 6 mil per.

Staal isn't getting 6 mil from anyone.

4.5 for 6 years.
