How so?

You still have issues in goal. Smith is an unknown and Ellis is coming from a defensive system.

We have not met the same people. Fortunately that level of dumb is not the norm, but they are out there!

Will this deal involve a handshake?

If he's on waivers he doesn't really have a choice on where he wants to go.

Stamkos for Gagne, E5, almost a done deal according to Eklund But yeah, I'd like to have him if the asking price isn't high. He might be a good space filler for one to two years and a nice two-way forward during a cup run.

If this happens, Habs fans will hate the Lightning even more. They already have their own Gagne to Tampa thread going.

I proposed this in the trade forum:

Alex Killorn or Mitch Fadden + PHI 2nd rounder from the Meszaros trade for Gagne.

They get a future top six guy if they don't **** him up that is responsible in both ends of the ice and can produce, and a pick that they need because Holmgren hands them out like its a ****ing party.

Make it Fadden and I wouldn't hate it too much.

Yeah, that's where I pulled the link from but it's already in the trades forum. Philly fans must think he's Kaberle....

I don't want to say its overpayment, but its borderline unnecessary.

Just out of curosity, but am I the only fan here that thinks Fadden can actually be a decent NHLer?

Probably.

Anything more than a 3rd round pick for Gagne is overpayment.

I say, if they don't like the offer, than they can stay in cap hell period. I don't see any bidding war going on, do you?

Exactly. We're talking about one year of Gagne. The potential to work out a contract means nothing to me. Gagne isn't going to put us over the top this season, and giving up too much is not fitting the strategy of patience Yzerman is trying to implement.

We could just as well trade for his rights after the season. In any case, he'd be just as free to join any team that will have him, at that point.

He's not a perennial all-star. He's not a lock for Team Canada. He's not even the best forward on his team. He's injury prone, and he's probably peaked. Why should we give Philly the farm?

I do however, see a potential bidding war over him, though not to a great degree. The Islanders, Thrashers, and depending on wherever Kovalchuk signs (read: LA), *or* the Devils may have interest in him. Two of those teams are divisional rivals, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

if those are the teams, there may not be much of a bidding war. i can't see gagne waiving his NTC for the 1st two teams, and the devils are a major threat in the division. that would present a decent opportunity to make a modest offer and see what sticks
