Pretty much.

He thinks he has the ability to deke people (ala Malkin) but simply does not and usually ends up giving the puck away.

In Mitchy's own mind he is an awesome offensive player. You can see it in the way he plays, skating around with the puck looking like he's about to do something awesome but at the same time totally lacking in the talent required to pull it off.

IMO the best way to sum it up is... Both players resemble each other in Position, Size and Type of skill.

THE CATCH is Johny Malkin is a 3 out of 10 and Evgeni Malkin is a 10 ot of 10

Basicly a poor mans Malkin

Top 5 in the league imo.

Crosby
Ovechkin
Mitchell
Malkin
Datsyuk

(4th and 5th can be disputed and so can 1 and 2 but Mitchell is solid right at #3)

To add, I think Newfie John was the first to say "Johnny Malkin". Credit where it's due. Before then it was John "Malkin" Mitchell.

I remember I called him out and said he plays like he thinks he's a Lemieux-Datsyuk hybrid. The nick Johnny Malkin however is Gold, props to whomever actually said it first.

EDIT: Seems like Newfire did it first. Gold! Newfire GOLD!

(read with a crusty cowboy voice...if possible)

Yep Newfie John came up with a doozy one night...Think back to kessels first game with the Leafs (against Tampa). Everyone was chompin' at the bit to be put on his line. Somehow Johnny boy ended up there and started doing all kinds of things like deking and putting on his best show to say "Hey, I belong here"...some of his moves were pretty good, others, not so good. Well a legend was born that night, not so much Kessels performance, but the night Johnny Mitchell became Johnny Malkin by virtue of one Newfie John...and that's the God's honest truth of it boy.

It's because there was a picture from the NHL 11 game coming out with Malkin wearing number 39 (Mitchells number) and Mitchell wearing 71 (Malkin number). I beleave it was a mistake and thats where it went from.

Nah, this definitely pre-dates NHL 11 as people were using this nickname last calendar year.

I think it just spawned one day after days and weeks of people being frustrated watching Mitchell. He had been playing as though he thought he was an talented offensive player, but in fact he just kept making the same deke every time and would lose the puck 90% of the time.

It may have also been fueled by some comments he made in the media, as the Leafs were weak at centre and the big question was who was going to play with Kessel. Mitchell got his turn and was quoted as saying something along the lines of "well obviously I'm not Savard but hopefully I can create a little room for Kessel on the ice." I don't have a link, but it was a fairly harmless comment - but people found it hilarious he would mention himself in the same sentence as Savard.

There was a game quite awhile back where the Leafs were down a goal with a few seconds left to make one last play. Johnny ended up with the puck along the boards, and had 2 players crashing the net who were more skilled than him. Despite having time to do something, Johnny tried to deke the defender and proceeded to run the clock off failing at deking and ended up with the puck still on his stick without a shot.

That was the day I started the name "Johnny Malkin". I mentioned it on a call in show, and on the official forums I circulated it around for the last 2 years (they weren't useless back then) and it caught on.

Oddly enough, the same situation played itself out last year as well, and he once again ran down the clock doing basically nothing (I think he ended up shooting wide, while Kessel watched in disappointment). That was around the time that the name caught on like wildfire.

That Newfie John thing is BS... the name has been around much longer. It didn't start on these forums.
