Bozak had a great rookie season. Kaberle as well.

Perhaps we had a losing team so we didn't get a chance to see how good he really was.

I always hoped he would win the Selke trophy while playing for us, like Dougy did.

Even though Steen didn't turn out too hot for us, he had a great rookie season, as did Wellwood.

For the hope of a cornerstone emerging for us and someone we can build a team around.

I just haven't seen the special qualities that he posseses since Wendel.

OP of course meant since Schenn. Or at the very least Kaberle.

Luke Schenn? You know, the guy who was a rookie in 2008-09? I know, its a long time ago, but I think you can remember him.

Reimer also had a huge impact LAST season.

Kaberle was great for us, as is Schenn right now.

Gardiner brings that game like a Lidstrom or a Neidermayer would, great at both ends of the ice.

He is a big part of this team and a big part of the success so far.

Yeah Steen 75gp, 18g, 27a, 45p in his first season. Pretty impressive.
Wellwood 81gp, 11g, 34a, 45p in his first season. Just as impressive.

Gardiner looks nice but can as easily end up being compared to Leopold as well as Campbell when he hit is peak. Just to take a couple of examples.

I remember not caring much for Kabs his first few seasons until him and McCabe formed some nice chemistry. He made a lot of boneheaded plays in his younger years, as do most rookies, but Im not seeing that with Gardiner. He's playing the way Kaberle did when he was 25 right now.

I would say that Gardiner is the best offensive-ish, puck moving defenceman rookie since....frig....Al Iafrate perhaps? Thats going back.

Schenn was the best stay at home rookie dman we've had since the 80's; actually I can't think of one better as a rook, Luke Richardson maybe?????

I was never a fan of Alex Steen but his best season that I recall here was his rookie season, which isn't saying a whole heck of a lot. Im still glad we traded him. Even if we got hosed.

Things looked bright with Steen, Stajan as our future captain, Jiri's Tlusty and Kyle Wellwood.

Even so, you cannot justify putting him ahead of those guys atm as he hasn't really reached those (unrealistic IMO) expectations. He has not made an impact like Potvin did in his rookie season, or Reimer even. A case can still be made for Kaberle and Schenn as well.

My vote goes to Mike Johnson. 47 Points as a rookie in the dead puck era.

Reimer is still a rookie, so is Kadri. But yeah, I get your point.
