I just started watching the show on Netflix and I think it's great....a better detective show than they're trying to make on NBC with Elementary but the thing I find annoying is how he has to pretend to be psycich. For the first episode or two it would've been fine but just make him a consulting detective at some point, better than those stupid moments where he has to pretend to be having a vision.

It would end up being just another detective show if he didn't have to pretend to be psychic.
What does it matter that he is not a psychic and that he merely uses his power of deduction to figure stuff out. Only the methodology changes. I don't see the big deal.
Juliet is understandably upset because he didn't tell her and all but yeah...
It's important that Shawn fakes being a psychic because that's who he is. If he doesn't do all the theatrics and fake psychic stuff, then he's basically just his dad. And the one thing Shawn doesn't want to be is his dad.
Also the pilot establishes that the only way the cops would even listen to him is the fake psychic schtick, because they didn't believe he could possibly be as skilled as his is if he were "normal".
and finally, it's subtly hinted at times that at least the chief has known for some time that he's not really psychic, but lets it go because Shawn is good enough/valuable enough to not want to make an issue out of it.
also, it may be a month-old post, but someone asked why Psych takes shots at The Mentalist: Because The Mentalist is Psych if Shawn were up front about what he's doing. They're ragging on the show (in a somewhat less-than-malicious way) for being a copycat.

Relationships are built on trust and he broke that trust by lying to her the entire time he's known her. It would have been one thing had he come clean on his own at some point, but her finding out on her own makes it even worse.
I'm on season 2 and I probably should not read this thread due to spoilers. But the only reason I like this show is that it feels like more of a comedy than a detective/crime show and I find it hard to see a situation with Shawn which involves drama.

It can pull of drama when it wants to. The thing is that they prefer to go for the comedic slant and it does play better that way.

Honestly he has made such a joke out of it that over the years I just assumed that everyone kinda knew already without it having ever been said explicitly. I thought they all suspected it already and that everyone knew there were no such thing as psychics.

His dad knows, Gus knows, Vic Most likely always knew.
The only real people who didn't/shouldn't are Juliet and Lassie but of course we all know how lassie feels about it.

I love how on half the cases, Gus just happens to have background knowledge (comic con, the sea lion, dinosaur, etc). He has a ridiculous amount of hobbies. I also love when he gets angry and how he emphasizes words when he talks.
Also, I liked Juliet at the beginning but on the 4th season atm and she's a fairly boring character. Should've gotten someone a bit more comedic for the part.
