Rangers #12 Prospect Poll

Chad Johnson started slow but eventually ran away with the first spot on our second tier of prospects. Johnson is one of only 4 ranger prospects, along with Mike Sauer, Dane Byers, and Matt Zaba, to see regular season NHL action, and none of those players cracked the top 10.

NYR Prospect Ranking

Top Prospects

1. Derek Stepan (C) - Drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2008 Draft
2. Chris Kreider (LW) - Drafted in the 1st Round of the 2009 Draft
3. Evgeny Grachev (LW) - Drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2008 Draft
4. Ryan McDonagh (D) - Drafted in the 1st Round by Montreal in the 2007 Draft.
5. Mats Zuccarello Aasen (F) - Undrafted, Signed by NYR in 2010.
6. Dylan Mcilrath (D) - Drafted in the 1st Round in the 2010 Draft
7. Ethan Werek (F) - Drafted in the 2nd Round in the 2009 Draft
8. Dale Weise (F) - Drafted in the 4th Round in the 2008 Draft.
9. Christian Thomas (F) - Drafted in the 2nd Round in the 2010 Draft.
10. Carl Hagelin (LW) - Drafted in the 6th Round in the 2007 Draft

Second Tier

11. Chad Johnson (G) - Drafted by Pittsburgh in the 5th Round of the 2006 Draft
12. ?

Roman Horak was added, nominations go to Dane Byers, Thomas Kundtratek, and Nigel Williams()

Last year's #12 prospect was Mike Sauer.

Sauer, add Kundratek.

I think the ship has sailed for David Kveton, which is dissapointing because at the end of 08-09 I had high hopes for him.

I thought he had one more year on his contract? I could be totally wrong here.

He may, I just get the feeling that rangers management isnt going to stress bringing him over. He didnt substantially improve from last year, and the whole situation kind of stinks of Jan Marek.

Maybe. I figure if I add him now he would be around #16-18 anyways.

Sauer.

Boy, Kundratek vs. Byers is tough. I'll go with Kundratek based on slightly higher upside IMO.

I'll take bets with people that Valentenko makes the Rangers before Sauer.

Maybe. Sauer doesn't seem to be in the Rangers plans. That in and of itself doesn't make Sauer a lesser prospect. Gilroy made the league before Sanguinetti and McDonagh, but I'd take either of them over Matt.

I'm confused how Weise is ranked so high and yet Byers isn't even on the selection list yet. Two very similar players, am I mistaken? Except for last season when he was injured, Byers has put up nearly 50 points in the AHL for 3 seasons. 47, 46, and 51. Weise has higher upside? sure, but at this rate Byers is going to end up 10 spots below him.

There's also a two year difference in age. Byers hasn't progressed much, either...IMO.

Valentenko>>>Sauer based on health alone.

Now that I'm looking at the list again I feel like Chad Johnson should definitely be above Weise, Thomas, and Hagelin. He's more NHL ready than them and other than Thomas I feel like he'll have a bigger impact in the NHL down the road anyway. If he gets the chance to backup lundqvist and show his worth he's going to fetch decent return.

I really don't get this. A 47 pt season. A 46 pt season right out of juniors--both putting him in the top 5 scoring on the team. The third season he destroys his knee early on and misses almost the entire season--comes backs for the playoffs and is practically their best forward in the playoffs. Coming off that injury he hits 50 pts last year which is pretty good considering the nature of his injury and that he'd missed practically a whole year and keeping in mind Gernander's defensive minded approach and that Byers isn't supposed to be a big scorer.

One other factor to consider. He's obviously thought highly enough of in Hartford that they gave him the C.

You do realize that Valetenko didn't play for most of the last two seasons, right? He played 4 games in the 2008-09 season in the AHL and 8 games that same year in the KHL (Wanted to go home for family reasons or just defected back to Russia, don't know the truth on that one). He then played just 7 games last season in the KHL due to an injury. He also play just 57 games in his first season in the AHL.

So in the last three seasons, he's played a grand total of 76 games. Meanwhile, during that same three year period, Sauer has played 71, 64, and 42 games, respectively. That doesn't include a 3 game stint with the Rangers in the 2008-09 season.

Last season aside, I watch a lot of Pack games online, so I'm pretty familiar with Byers. I just don't see anything in his game that leads me to believe he'll ever amount to more than a fourth line mucker at the NHL level. That he'll turn 25 this year doesn't so anything to change my opinion of him. Let's put statistics aside here for a moment: what is it about Byers that makes you think he'll become a legitimate NHL player at some point, and not a career AHLer?

Solid post. It's not about contributions at the AHL level, but projecting the player as to how they will fair at the NHL level. I don't care how many points Byers put up against AHL competition. It's fairly obvious to me that his upside is as a good 4th liner.

And the Horak neglecting continues. I think he's going to have a very solid NHL career. Keeps getting better.
