2nd Line Center to Kings

Many of us Kings fans believe we need a 2nd line center to play behind Kopitar until Brayden Schenn is ready to step in....It is possible that Schenn will have a great training camp and wind up with a roster spot, but i feel he needs 1 more year before he makes the big club permanently..

We already have 2 centers who are marginal 2nd line centers in Stoll and Handzus...however, i feel that Handzus is one of the best 2 way 3rd liners in the game, so thats where he should be....

Stoll also has a great 2 way game and is one of the best faceoff guys in the game, but i feel that we need a change and that he should go (Either him or Handzus and i think that the latter fits our team better)

So, we need a sold 2nd line center who doesnt cost a ton of money..who is out there?? He would most likely play with Brown/Williams and Smyth ( as long as " he who shall not be named" finally makes a decision)

I dont think it is an absolute must, as Stoll is serviceable on the 2nd line and we have Schenn who is very close, but id like to know who is out there and possibly available.

Ideally Stoll would be going the other way....

There's Marc Savard who should not cost us much, although he is a very talented player and since Boston's got a logjam in the center and has a 4 million cap hit until he's about 40.

I would just let Handzus, Stoll and Schenn battle it out for that #2 spot.

I consider Handzus to be the true 2nd line C for the Kings behind Kopitar. I don't think they should acquire any 2nd line C unless he will be here for one or two seasons, as I see Loktionov and Schenn as being players who should fill that need within that time frame.

I dont think Loktionov will remain a center much longer, he's too weak physically to be a center. Schenn is the only viable replacement.

I'd put Savard higher than Kopitar on my depth chart... At least at the present time. Although that would be a scary combo either way.

For a second line center I'd say Andy McDonald would be fantastic in LA. But I'd really doubt the blues would part with him... Maybe Tim Connoly could be had?

God forbid this Kovalchuk stuff ever ends, but Handzus would be the best fit up the middle with Kovalchuk.

Still not sure why so many think Kopitar and Kovi are going to mesh - both play almost the exact same game, and they have to carry the puck to be effective. Anze might learn to dish the puck more as he gains experience, but using his linemates is still the biggest weakness in his game. He is still very much a one-on-one player at even strength.

Handzus may not seem to have the wheels to keep up with Kovalchuk, but he has the most hockey smarts on the roster by far, to go with that center lane presence and board work. Remember how well he gelled with Havlat before he ripped up his knee?

Smyth - Kopitar - Simmonds
Kovalchuk - Handzus - Williams
Clifford (if he makes it) - Stoll - Brown
Clune/Parse - Richardson - Cliche/Westgarth

That whole 1st or 2nd line stuff is best left for the EA sports crowd - both lines would get 18-22 minutes a night, so it's just a matter of matchups.

I'm no Kings fan, but if I were them, I'd just stand pat for now, and wait for Schenn to arrive. Why give up assets for a 1 year stop gap?

Keep rebuilding with your youth. Give it time, and you guys will be a force to be reckoned with.

Yeah, this may be the answer. We know Schenn is going to be a solid player. He needs time to develop. It's too bad that it is the NHL for him this season or back to the CHL/WHL. If he has a good camp he will make the Kings' team.

That plus Niskanen, but Richards won't command that much at the deadline without a cap friendly extension.

Centers I can think of that would be available to use on the Kings 2nd line:

Marc Savard
R.J. Umberger
Brad Richards
Brandon Dubinsky
Jeff Carter

These are the centers I could see being able to play on the 2nd line in Los Angeles. Also, these guys are all likely available for the right price. Maybe the Kings don't even need a new 2nd line center. Schenn could end up taking over very soon.
