Effects of the 2010 WC

Since the German National team finished in the top 4 at the 2010 WC, players from the team seem to be recieving the attention that many of the deserve from NHL teams. Either drafted or UFA, German players seem to be pouring into NA leagues at a rapid pace.

To the NHL:
Mueller signs with Toronto as a UFA
Holzer signs his ELC with Toronto
Endras signs with the Minnesota Wild
Krueger is recieving attention from the Canes

To Juniors/drafted (some unrelated):
Kuhnhackl drafted by Pittsburgh, playing in OHL
Rieder playing in OHL, 1st round potential
Abeltshauser drafted by San Jose, playing in QMJHL
Hofflin drafted by Hawks, drafted into QMJHL
Grubauer drafted by Caps, playing in OHL
Elsner drafted by Nashville
Noebels drafted to WHL
Keil drafted to WHL
Latta drafted to OHL

Do you guys see this trend continuing and more players being signed this season? Also, do you think that this past WC will have a dramatic effect on hockey in Germany and it's popularity among people?

Any positive effect that the WC might have had on popularity of the sport in Germany is now being demolished by the Kassel vs. DEL drama.

Dfire is right concerning the public perception of hockey in Germany. The entire Kassel drama is more than taking away all the good publicity we had.

But the good thing that isn't touched by Kassel's screw-up is the perception of German hockey in NA. The signings and the draft picks are a response to a higher awareness overseas. This could mean that German talents will be watched more intensely by NA scouts in the next years.

As for the more players signed, Im not so sure about this season, but Im afraid its just a short effect and in the future seasons that the signings wont be in such an extent as this year. Similarly like the Czechs, whove become a hot commodity (even much hotter than before the WC win) for the KHL. Things like this usually have only a short term effect and if Germany doesnt perform well at the 2011 WHC everything could be completely different in a year.

As for the second question, I doubt that even more. In a way it was quite unlucky that the hockey WHC was played in 2010- the year of the soccer World Cup -in Germany. By mid-June the majority of the non-hockey fans that actually watched the hockey games during the WHC have probably forgotten all about hockey. A misfortune for hockey in Germany is that it gets run over by soccer in the media (plus even other sports for example like handball- dont think any TV channel did such a coverage of the hockey WC played in Germany as RTL did for the handball WC in 09 played in Croatia). This can be also proved if you checked the media reports on sports from the time of the IHWC- IMO the main topic everywhere was that the soccer national team captain Michael Ballack would miss the WC due to an injury.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be so sure if Germany could have matched this success in any other year. With this being an Olympic year, interest in the World Championship was lower, thus the competition not as strong as it had been in the recent past.
