Rule 28.7 - Goalie Participating in the Play Over the Center Red Line

Here's the rule for reference:
Quote:
28.7 Participating in the Play Over the Center Red Line - If a goalkeeper participates in the play in any manner (intentionally plays the puck or checks an opponent) when he is beyond the center red line, a minor penalty shall be imposed upon him. The position of the puck is the determining factor for the application of this rule.
Was watching this clip for a laugh:

I'm curious if anyone knows why that rule is there, some previous incident or something? Did some google searching but I can only find the rule and not why it was brought in.

My guess is that this rule, much like the goalies-can't-be-captains rule, dates back to the old days when goalies were considered "very different" from skaters (even now, we consider hockey as a five-on-five sport for the most part).

I'd imagine that the purpose of this rule was to keep teams from using the goalie as a third defenseman, and is a product of a time where any player worth his salt couldn't outskate a goalie back to his own net

Gretzky was either laughing too hard, or really could not play defense...

Wasnt it Suitcase Smith(Goalie) that kept skating across the center ice and into the play till the yintroduced the rule?

I thought it was to discourage goalies crossing the red line when scrums broke out.

Roy put on a sick move there even though nobody was defending him.

ditto, though it probably a combination of things as well.

seriously, instead of a rule book they should just have a bunch of youtube videos of Roy

Is there a rule for that too? I thought Luongo was a captain?

No 'C' on his jersey. Back before the rule, there was a goalie who was captain (forgot the player and team) who would skate across the rink to talk to the refs about whatever BS thing he thought up to get his team a breather without using a time out.

Ahhh the good old days... those clips are good for a laugh... especially Roy with the Savardian spin-o-rama moves.

Roy was an odd, superstitious fellow which was part of his uniqueness and it all helped to make him one of the very best goalies of all time.

In the very early days, goalies were known to leave the net and take shots at the other end. Remember that this was when their equipment was quite different, with mitt-like catching gloves and very small pads, so it isn't as ridiculous as it sounds that a goalie would be a legit threat to score.

Not only is that probably the reason for this rule, but it's also probably the origin of "pulling the goalie" for an extra attacker. With the red-line rule, the goalie is forced to go to the bench for a "shift change" rather than jump directly into the play.

because players cannot interfere w/goalies... if they were allowed to bring the puck out then they would have to change the goalie interference rule. It would just be too complicated...

In my opinion, goalies should be fair game outside the crease (and perhaps behind the net) and should be allowed to skate anywhere on the ice. If you really want to prevent goalies in fights then perhaps put a tougher penalty on them for doing so. But allow them to cross the red line and be in the offensive zone .

Roy never ceased to amaze me.

By memory it was because of Eddie Giacoman(?) of the Rangers who was so good handling the puck he could and did actually skate the puck up the ice like a regular player to take shots at the net. he once said that never actually scoring a goal was his greatest regret.
