True, although the Kings don't have Ryan Smyth under contract for 10 more years either.

That is probably a good thing. In 10 years Smyth will probably be working for Oilers somewhere in upper management.

You say it like the long-term deal is a bad thing. I don't find anything wrong with a 5.8M cap hit for ten years for Kovy.

NJ got a heck of a deal.

This is actually pretty funny (sorry if someone already posted it)

From Lupul's Twitter:

@JLupul: Kovalchuk chooses "Jersey Shore" over "The Hills" and apparently has no plans on ever aging.

I can't "react" to this yet. It's too early. I have to see the numbers once they are confirmed. If it came down to a $700,000 per year, cap hit, boy oh boy, it will take some meditation before I can put fingers to keyboard.

Sure they got a good deal. Why didn't they get a better deal? Why not 18 or 19 years? Why not 21?

At some point term becomes a problem. 17 years is nuts. He's going to be past his prime with 10 years remaining on his deal.

With the purported intelligence of DL being beyond question on this board, and DL's admission that it has been difficult to get players to come to LA, and the recent swing and miss with Hamhuis, shouldn't it have been obvious that to get a player of Kovy's stature, we were going to have to overpay? Isnt UFA, always a player's market for top end talent?

Who does DL think he is PT Barnum?

That is the bottom line. Of course, there are a million ways to spin it. Even Kings17 was claiming a CAP hit of <$7m would be a success. This is a major failure on DL and/or AEG's part.

Boggles my mind Kovalchuk even considered the Kings' offer.

He is going to be retired by the time he is 37. Book it and we'll dig up this thread in 10 years!

It just amazes me that people will spin this in any direction that makes them feel better. This was a failure.

But we offered 15 years. At that point it does not matter. He won't be playing then anyways

He's not going to play the last 5 years of his contract (age 39-44) for $550k.

In DL's second part interview with Hammond, on the last question he asks DL about talking to Fro. Dean's answer is this.

LOMBARDI: “I don’t know. It’s something to look into.”

To be honest, I like Frolov, but I'll be pissed if we bring him back and count that is one of our moves for the off season. We know what Frolov can do here, it's time to move on. I know there are a lot of Frolov lovers here, but I'm kind of tired of him. I want some new blood, especially at the price Fro is asking for.

Lombardi is already trying the, "it's too early" spin for not going after Kovalchuk hard enough. It's not like Kopitar is 35. Uh, Dean, Kopitar will probably not be in LA when he is 35.

BTW - Does anyone know the average number of years a GM stays with 1 team? I'm sure Lou knows that he will be long gone before Kovalchuk's contract expires.

Dean needs to build the best possible team every year, he is always worried too much about the future. Dean, you may not be here more than 3 more years anyways. He probably won't be around to see Doughty and Kopitar in their primes.
So now offering 15 years and 80 million bucks to one player isn't trying hard enough?

I bet if Dean had offered the 17 years, 100+ mill, and the Devils had offered the 15 years, 80 mill, and Kovy still chose the Devils, you guys would come up with reasons like "Dean must have offended him" or something.

Whose really spinning who here?

I'm uber pissed about Kovalchuk.

However, I have maintained from the very beginning, that we don't NEED Kovalchuk to get better. We don't NEED Kovalchuk to win the cup. If other quality and smart moves are made, I'll forget about Kovalchuk.... eventually.

9,000 posts is a pretty good run for one player.

You can continue the Kovalchuk discussion here: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=800647
