Jamie Langenbrunner make long trip to attend Kovalchuk news conference

Quote:
Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner came a long way to get to New Jersey for this afternoon’s news conference at Prudential Center to announce the re-signing of left wing Ilya Kovalchuk to a 17-year, $102 million contract.

Langenbrunner was in Lake Tahoe, Calif. playing in golf tournament and was to fly home to Minnesota on Monday. Instead, Minneapolis became a connecting point for his next flight to Newark.

Langenbrunner was invited to be at the news conference, which begins at 1 p.m. and wanted to be here. Langenbrunner, alternate captains Zach Parise and Patrik Elias and goaltender Martin Brodeur are the players expected to attend the news conference and welcome back Kovalchuk.

“It’s definitely good for our team,” Langenbrunner said. “He’s obviously a great player and somebody that will get better with a little time here.”

The re-signing of Kovalchuk and the other summer addtions of Jason Arnott, Anton Volchenkov, Henrik Tallinder and backup goaltender Johan Hedberg has the Devils optimistic about their chances in the Eastern Conference in 2010-11, but Langenbrunner also knows that there are no guarantees.

“That has to be proven on the ice,” Langenbrunner said when I asked if the off-season moves make the Devils a much-better team than last season. “Any time you make a lot of changes, it takes some time to get comfortable with each other. I think that (head coach John MacLean) will do that right away and make sure everybody knows what will be expected of them from a player standpoint. (The team) may look better on paper, but we have to prove that on the ice. I believe we have the pieces there, but we have to put it together.”

A couple of years ago—or even a couple of days ago—many would have been shocked if Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello signed any player to a 17-year contract, but Langenbrunner said it is just a sign of the times in the NHL.

“The game has changed in that regard not only to the players’ benefit, but also to the team’s benefit to sign certain players to longer-term deals,” Langenbrunner said. “I think Lou has always adapted himself to whatever the rules are and whatever makes sense for the team. It makes sense for the team as much as it makes sense for Kovy.”

Have the terms of MacLean's contract ever been reported?

I like seeing TG report that Elias and Marty will be there too. The full leadership cadre of the team will be on hand to welcome Kovy back into the fold. Outstanding.

I think perhaps too much is being made of this being a paradigm shift. Obviously it looks like the team is going to be more offensively-minded next year, and this has been a big FA period, but I still look at the Kovalchuk signing as an ownership thing.

You just have to look at the Devils website, and the team breaking the news in the first place, to see that ownership has high hopes for how he is going to almost single-handedly drive the economics of the team going forward.

Obviously if Lou was not on-board at all, he could have found ways to not get it done, but I still think everything points to a strong push by ownership. And let's face it, there's no way this deal could have been done if it wasn't structured this way, so to say this is how Lou will do business from now on isn't a definitive statement, in my mind.

If you remove this signing, I think everything is much more in line with the way the team normally does business, and it could have just as easily gone the other way, with LA winning in the end.

Also, Lou was going to commit to using some kids this year regardless, from all indications, and has been saying since the Kovalchuk trade that there was a glut of talent that the team hasn't had in recent years that made the deal possible in the first place. And he still needs to make some trades before the youth movement crystallizes.

I can understand people viewing it as a paradigm shift, but I look at it as a strange situation predicated by ownership's wishes, a rare FA, and organizational depth that hasn't been around in a while. If Parise signs a similar deal, we're a little more freewheeling this year, and kids play a large role, I'll start to come around.

I'm pretty groggy this morning, so hopefully this makes some sort of sense.

Now THAT sounds like a great idea! And I think being at the first home game vs. LA is becoming a necessity.

All I gotta say is I love it. I hate the way these long contracts are circumventing the "rules" but if everyone is doing it, why shouldn't we as well.

With this small of a cap hit we only need to move one player to clear and I think that is going to be Salvador. I would move his $ before Langs at this point. Even if we had to waive him it isn't a huge deal. I think we could get at least a 3rd from someone for him though
