A surprisingly short and informative interview with Dean Lombardi

first!

JD: Was it going to take $100 million to sign Kovalchuk?
DL: That was the number that was out there since Day 1. We didn't want to go there. We were trying to figure out how close we could get. We were in the $80 million territory. We put together a contract that would see him play 'til he was 40. We looked at guys like Luc (Robitaille), Yzerman, Messier and took a look at how old they were when they were still productive. We felt 40 was pretty accurate. We didn't want a contract that would go beyond his "true" playing years.

Man, this guy is by the book.....

JD: With Kovalchuk out of the picture, does that mean Alexander Frolov could be back in the picture?
DL: (laughs) Good question! Let me put it this way. We will look at all of our options. He has a better chance than he did 15 days ago. We just have to see.
LOL!

I wouldn't call it surprising unless you are just talking about it being short.

Definitely talking about it being short. The writer must have done some editing as I've never seen a Lombardi interview that was short and to the point.

Does anyone else call BS about more fans telling him not to sign Kovalchuk when responding to the fans backlash question? I'm sure he had a few but it looks like he's softening his blow a bit.

Nah, I imagine a lot of people got taken up in the heat of FA but, before then this board was split 50-50 at worst, with maybe the majority saying Kovy would need too much money/wouldn't fit.

No, visit LGK. It's almost the exact opposite of this place.

No, but I do get to use slightly more colorful language.

Come on over sometime.

yeah..this was interesting. I was thinking who's emailing Dean? Either a group of Devils' fans or a circle jerk with their own agenda. Doesn't really matter, it's July 21st, Dean went hard after Kovalchuk.
