i think i go back to holmgren, trade him a bottle of my spit for jeff carter and chris pronger, then aquire the copyright to the flyers logo to boot. i then pay homer 10 dollars a month to mow and maintain my yard. i probably succeed in getting him to give me a draft pick for being allowed to work at my home as well.
People talk about how Lowe ruined the second contract. When really, the players who get the massive second-deals usually deserve it. Look at Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin, Toews, Kane, Doughty, Stamkos, etc, tell me none of those people deserve a massive contract?
How about mention the likes of Vanek, Penner, Kessel and Phaneuf.
If I'm Yzerman, I'd sign some other forwards first before i think about re-signing stamkos. Like a Modin or a Madden type depth player.
Thats expected, as well as Downie getting re-upped.
I think the dialog will be open but they'll hold off until a bit into the season to see what his production is like. I don't think he'll be getting 8.5 or anything, not based off one year of production. Someone mentioned Backstrom as a gauge... I like that. Thats a good bargaining chip, Backstrom has proven more to this point, production is close point-wise.
*George McPhee, Ray Shero, and Steve Yzerman are sitting in a boardroom*
Yzerman: Hello gentleman, I understand that you're both interested in trading your franchise players, Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, respectively.
McPhee: Steve what the hell are you talking about.
Yzerman: It's quite simple really, I am offering to trade you Steven Stamkos on the last year of his contract in exchange for both players. Then, once his contract runs out, he will resign in Tampa Bay and be the cherry on top of the dynasty cake.
McPhee: Steve, I have no intention of trading Ovechkin...
Shero: And how the hell are you going to trade Stamkos for both players? They play on two different teams for christ's sake! Who do you think you are?!?!?
Yzerman: I'm Steve ****ing Yzerman.
McPhee/Shero: Okay, okay. You got yourself a deal.
Yzerman: Very good gentleman, the paperwork should be drafted in a couple of hours. Pleasure doing business with you.
*15 minutes later*
McPhee: How did he do that?
Shero: Does your butt feel sore?
Note: I took a piece of this story from a previous thread. It's may way of paying homage. Don't flame.
Holy crap, I didn't even read this before mine. Great minds think alike
Keep Paul Holmgren on speed dial because I can bend him over whenever I please. Those Giroux and JVR kids would like nice with Stamkos what do you want for them Paul?
Holmgren gimmie Vinny I'll throw in Carter to balance salary and a 2nd rounder in 2013.
There's no way Stamkos tops 50 goals and signs "on the cheap."
I expect this guy to sign a deal up to UFA. If they take him past UFA, he's going to make even more. This guy's going to get paid major big time.
As an RFA, yes, you will get him cheaper than if he was a UFA. If you try to sign him long term now, then no, you will not get a discount. And like you said, if he has another strong season, he will get paid big time when the long term deal comes.
Case in point, Parise signed a 4 year, 3.125M per deal after a 31g 31a season. When the deal expires at the end of this season, he's still an RFA.
Stamkos, being a 50 goal scorer and a former #1 pick would get more, but it is possible for Yzerman to not have to break the bank on him quite yet. 4-4.5M a season for 3 years its not that unreasonable, especially if he intends on helping the Lightning develop into a winner again.
I would consider 4-4.5M for 50 goals getting it "on the cheap"
