Betts probably misses start of season

RT @sbaicker: "It's probably closer to four months before I'm able to play again. So we'll see what the doctor says in a couple weeks" - Blair Betts

RT @sbaicker: Four months from now puts us in late November. So the Flyers very well could be without Betts for the first month+ of the regular season.

Quote:
It flew under the radar some, but Flyers center Blair Betts had an update on his estimated return from offseason shoulder surgery. And it's not encouraging.

"It's probably closer to four months before I'm able to play again," Betts told Comcast SportsNet Tuesday. "So we'll see what the doctor says in a couple weeks."
Quote:
If his estimate is correct, Betts could be out of the lineup until late November -- effectively missing the first two months of the Flyers' season. And he'll be missed.

The Flyers' fourth-line center, Betts was the anchor of the team's penalty kill last season. But he also set career highs in points (18), assists (10), plus/minus (plus-7) and game-winning goals (2). He's a known character guy in the locker room, and is well-liked among both fans and teammates.

Betts' projected absence could clear space for center Darroll Powe, a restricted free agent. Though he did not file for arbitration, Powe remains unsigned. With a so-called "surplus" of centermen, questions have arisen concerning how -- or whether -- Powe could fit into the team's lineup.

Sweet! This should give us the ability to trade Hartnell for Redden. Just hope we don't have to throw in TOO many picks to make it a fair trade.

Who are we going to bring up? Or are we just going to go with Shelley, and Powe if re-signed?

That would be my assumption, but haven't seen anything about it either.

Walker can play the line 4 defensive center role.

Heh. Seriously though, who takes Betts' place? We can't have any of Richards, Carter, Giroux, or Briere on the 4th line (although I'm sure Homer thinks 4 scoring lines would be a great idea).

Any chance the Flyers sign Thoreson? They still own his rights.

This is when having a true 3rd line C would come in handy...

Who cares? The season doesn't start until the last 2 months of the season anyway.

That philosophy has served the Phillies very well.

I think they're going to play Carcillo in the top 9, but I really wouldn't mind bringing in Thoreson to play on the third line. Although maybe the Flyers are right about him since he hasn't signed anywhere yet.

No, no, no.

Instead of signing a defensively responsible 3rd line C that can chip in 40 points a season, we need to piss away all of our cap space taking on salary dumps and signing garbage players to inflated contracts.

Hey with Shelly on the 4th line we didn't need a 3rd player out there anyway.

Seriously though, I see no reason why Powe couldn't fill that spot for a bit and or Lappy move back to center and Powe on the wing.

our pk crew is looking pretty slim at the forward position. are the flyers planning on playing 3 d and 1 f on the pk? powe should have already been signed and we would be discussing thor or someone else to fill in for betts in the mean time. richards, carter, and giroux all look like they will have heavy pk loads this season. 2 yrs ago everyone was *****ing about how richards was worn out due to playing 397276 minutes a night on the PK.

trade carcillo for a pick; sign thor. he's much better defensively and looks to be better offensively now too. likely cheaper as well. hartnell can yap w/ the best of them and shelley can fight w/ the best of them. i love carcillo and his beautiful stache to death, but defensively our forwads currently look like a bunch of briere's and zherdev's.
