Crosby and the Nics lost in the Memorial Cup final against London Knights.

And that was an entirely different animal. Best-on-Best and Lindros really earned his spot during the tryouts/exhibition games.

Will be interesting to see how Murray does and how much ice he gets once Canada starts playing some of the fellow favorites.

If we could get their 2nd over all pick this year to grab Ryan Murray and LA's first round pick in 2013 I would look at it. Oilers could grab a top pairing potential type d man that might be NHL ready now and would have 3 first round draft picks in next year's draft. Add Justin Schultz via UFA and they are a goalie away from being a long term team that's contending.

id look at maybe trading the 1st and a younger prospect for someone like Mason (be tough for columbus to part with) or Fedor Tyutin. mix in some draft picks coming back edmontons way and its looking good.

I see ZERO chance of the Oilers picking Murray 1st...especially if he can be had 2nd or 3rd overall (Yakupov is the CLEAR, far and away, #1 pick in this draft...)

in any case, I say there's very slim chance the Oilers pass on elite talent and go for a "safe"pick

gathering elite assets never hurt anyone

any "safe" type of player doesn't seem to be faring well on button's list. that is murray's downfall on button's list as he is considered a "steady eddie." button also considers grigorenko to be a sure fire nhler, just not an elite one. the result? he dropped as well.

Ryan Murray = Ryan Suter. Lot of parallels. Neither is going to be giving you 50 pts year in year out but they are a jack of all trades.

I wouldn't mind the Leafs taking him one bit. Phaneuf/Gardiner with Murray would be a great defensive pairing.

I think Murray could easily give 50+ pts in a year. He has a good shot, and makes really good up ice passes and is very active on the rush. He's not this pure stay at home D-man everyone makes him out to be.

I agree, and I think most scouts do too, even if the casual fans don't. The production hasn't really been there, but the skillset certainly is. A 50+ point dman who is also great defensively is a heck of a commodity...

I think his scoring was decent for the Tips, considering they were arguably the worst offense in the league. Often he would produce 2on1s or 3on2s that his forwards just couldn't handle. He would routinely win every puck battle on the boards in the defensive zone, and turn it up the ice on a break, just to have one of the forwards botch a pass, forcing him to play defensively. He isn't flashy because he plays smart, rather than recklessly offensive.

I'd be okay with the Oilers taking him in the first round but only if they trade down.

McD is bigger, stronger and a much better skater than Murray

I find this misleading. Murray is a better prospect than McDonagh at the same age. My understanding is that Murray is strong, and quite a good skater. But hockey sense is everything for defensemen, and Murray has it in spades.

Considering only 5 defenders eclipsed the 50pt mark this season, I don't think 50+ points 'easily' is the right choice of words.

That being said, I likely haven't watched him as much as you two.

Better skater? Murray is one of the best skaters in this entire draft class.
