Have you actually really watched this guy play? He has some amazing skills, but not the work ethic to match. So no.
Okay, he had a ****** work ethic, played with slop and STILL put up 55 points in New York... now he will have very talented forwards around him, a reason to play hard (for a contract) and it is still unlikely he tops 70 points?
This is probably the most honest response so far. Some people have three players scoring 30 goals or more, do some of you even watch games or just play EA 2010?

Uh, excuse me idiot. Do you even watch the flyers games.
In 2008-09 we had 4!! yes 4! 30 goal scorers. With mike knuble scoring 27 and danny briere being injured all season. So we may of had 5. Don't insult people without knowing something about hockey.

lol, what? Carter is as close to a lock as you can get, Richards will most likely get 30, and both Hartnell and Briere are certainly capable of it.
Throw Zherdev on top of that and it's not anywhere near a stretch to say that three of our guys will score 30 goals.
I'm really hoping JVR pulls a Stamkos and goes ape****.
JVR simply just does not have Stamkos' shot and will always be more of a playmaker than scorer. Therefore, he's going to need a legit scorer on his line in order to maximize his potential. It's also going to take a few more years for JVR to really grow into his body and get strong enough to assert himself physically at the NHL level. The skill is there, now his physique just needs to catch up.

What if I play the devil's advocate and say he will wind up with 35 - 40 points. I think he will have a harder time adjusting back to the North American Style of play (stay with me here). He ends up in Laviolettes dog house, and loses the respect of his teammates for his sometimes overly flashy play and questionable two way game. He lands on the third line with Giroux seeing less ice time and limited powerplay involvement. despite being "demoted" to third line he still sees steady production and has good chemistry with Giroux, just not enough to get him to the 70 point plateau.
Aside from that He doesn't really connect with anyone on the team and becomes somewhat of an outcast. I also think he will miss considerable time due to injury.
On a positive note he will be near the top of the league in shootout goals, but we still won't win many of those with our current goaltending. I feel that failing to convert shootouts into wins will probably cost us control of the Atlantic division and give yet another year of ****** playoff seeding.
They both provide completely different things. I think Hartnell will stay a Flyer either way; Zherdev seems more like a stop-gap to me, to replace Gagne's production while guys like Giroux, Leino, and JVR develop. If Zherdev wants a significant raise after this season, I can't see him being resigned.

I think the only way we would be able to resign him (and Holgrem seems keen on the guy) would be to let a D-man go - Coburn or Carle. More than likely Coburn, because I think Mezo will produce as he did when he was in OTT.
One of two things will happen with Zherdev I think:
-He won't be effective enough to keep around beyond this season.
-If he is effective enough, he'll price himself out.
Either way, I think he's one-and-done here.
I am not sure he'll price himself out, he is signed now @ 2mil, IF they were to get rid of a Dman, thats another 3 then with OD contract off the books... that's enough - I hope Homer doesn't spend all the money on him if that is the case, but it's a possibllity.

He wants a long-term deal at some point. He won't get it here.

Well...I use "won't" loosely.
Why do I get the ominous feeling that Timonen is next on the list of players the Flyers will pressure into waiving his NTC and then unceremoniously ship him out of town for salary cap purposes next off-season?
Sorry to bring this thread off topic but..... Does anyone else find it hilarious that Shelley's become our human punchline? He's almost worth the $1.1M for the quality laughs he provides us with on a daily basis.
I've had a lot of laughs with the Shelley comments in this thread. I feel bad for the guy because it's not his fault for signing. Hopefully he makes us like him like Carbomb did.
As for projections, I expect Hartnell will have a bounce back year but I don't know how Richards will do. It depends on is linemates and regardless of who he plays with, they might not work out. Zherdev, Carter, Carbomb, Leino, who knows how it will work.

And the team was reliant on the fwds scoring in 08-09, last year they got more production from the blueline which is going to take goals away from the fwds. Last year they had two 30 goal guys(Carter-33/Richards-31/Briere-26), but got 30 goals from the defense, I am assuming this production will go up which means fwds production go down.
Carter 'ain't scoring 40, Richards could reach 30, but most likely you are going to see Zherdev, Briere, and Giroux all with 20-25 goals, Carter with the 33, but a more balanced production top to bottom. Zherdev getting some of the numbers suggested is a pipe dream.
So realistically this is the more likely scenario there Francis.
Which is why this is most realistic, with JvR, Hartnell, and Leino possibly not reaching 20:
Can we please not expect 60 points from JVR and 80 points from Giroux? Did you guys not learn ANYTHING from last season about predicting Giroux's "breakout" year last year? Don't even get me started on the people penciling Leino in with >40 points.
Let the young kids play, learn and grow. If they impress they impress, if they don't then don't bog them down with your unrealistic expectations. Leave the lofty predictions and bitter disappointment for the vets like Briere, Timonen, Hartnell, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised at all although Anthony San Filippo thinks Briere is the next one to be asked to waive.

Difference: Briere has a NMC which means you can't use waiving him as a means of leverage. I would be very surprised if he is moved any time before the 2013 season.
