Whitney is gone. Who will score the second most goals for the Canes this season?

I say Sutter.

I'm going to say Sutter as well.

Assuming it's not Jay Harrison, of course.

How can anyone say Sutter? Kid's not a goalscorer. I'm gonna go with the easy, and obvious (I think), answer by saying Jokinen.

True, but if you had told me he would be a 20 goal, 40 point scorer before the start of last season I would have laughed. The coaching staff is likely willing to give him more responsibilities after the way he played, and if he continues developing this rapidly I don't think it's completely out of the question. Still, I think Jokinen will score the second-most goals

I agree, but who else will score on the second line? If it's not Ruutu or Jokinen, Sutter seems like the next best bet.

Sure Sutter is a goalscorer. He netted 21 goals last year without what would constitute reasonable powerplay time for top two line center. After his improvement from 08-09, I wouldn't put anything past the kid at this point. But the truth is that he's more of a finisher than a passer. I was surprised by how strong his shot was last season.

I am going to go with an off the board pick here and say Chad Larose. Contract year, potential to play with Staal for a period of time, and the hot finish to last season. I think we could see 30 goals out of him and that may be enough for second place behind Staal provided Staal is healthy.

I would love to see Erik Cole bounce back and take it though. That would be an awesome story for him. The guy is .... wow is this true? The last player that was part of the 01-02 team to still be here in a playing capacity? Insane.

Not saying that that this isn't a challenging question, but the question of which defenseman will score the most goals might spark more debate. I'm going to go out on limb and say it'll either be Pitkanen, Babchuk, McBain, or Corvo.

Jokinen, again.

As for gee's question about defensemen, I'll go with Corvo.

All of this is assuming they stay healthy, of course.

I think Sutter could get 27-30. Jokinen 25. Cole 20-25. Sammy, Ruutu, LaRose in the 15-20 range. Honestly unlike some others I don't see goal scoring as our biggest problem.

Chuck, I realize you are a Cole fan, but given his last 5 years:

05: 30 goals; 06: 29; 07: 22; 08: 18; 09: 11....

What is it that makes you think he'll score 20-25 this year? Don't get me wrong..I'll be happy if he does, but he's been on a downward trend since 05 and I don't see why that will change.

I agree with some of the rest of what you said. Sammy and LaRose have been consistent in the past couple of years so that is reasonable (15-20 goals), I expect Ruutu to struggle a little after his injury so I don't expect more than 15-20 from him. I also think Jokinen should be in the 25 range. Not as good as last season, but he's a skilled guy who will get plenty of PP and 1st line time.

I'm not sure on Sutter though. His goal scoring was a huge surprise this past year, but I think he won't exceed that amount too much this coming year. First, he'll get a lot more focus from opposing teams this season and secondly, he'll have some uncertainty in his linemates. He surprised me this past season though....so never say never.

Anyhow..for the OPs question, I'm going to say Jokinen. He'll get lots of top line minutes and PP time so should be able to be the next leading scorer after Staal.

I wouldn't even mind this. As long as the second year isn't with us.

HUGE if here but if Ruutu can stay healthy he's my bet to be our #2 by a fair margin. I think Jussi's goal scoring is going to drop off a bit to 20-25, but his assists are going to go up by just that many if not more.

It's not like we have many goalscorers to choose from... would anyone have called Jokinen a goal scorer before last season either? Nope. His previous career high in goals was a whopping 17.

Sutter's never going to known around the league for goal scoring, but if he can pot 25-30 he'll probably be up near the team leaders in goals behind Staal.

I say Jokinen (25)...Sutter (20-25)
Would love to see Cole score at least 20

Wild cards: Tlusty, Larose

Back end: Babs has A LOT to prove in my opinion.

I don't want to open up the whole Cole can of worms again, and I am not going to make any excuses for him this year because it's time for him to perform. But that being said, Cole was injury-plagued last year. He scored at a pace that would have equaled 22 goals over a full 82 games. I think he'll match that pace this year and score somewhere between 20 and 25.

I think he might score 15 goals, which would be a great contribution. Honestly if he does that I will be satisfied. He's not Scott Niedermeyer back there, but if he can be decent defensively and put somewhere around 15 pucks in the net, I'm happy with him.
