that means that bieksa should be okay by late september, gillis is still likely going to trade bieksa

Uninformed Canucks fans?! Is that possible?

Gillis probably didn't advertise the injury because he still has some moves to make.

i watched global noon news and they said it happened yesterday.so you fail

sidenote squire barnes (who is waaaay more credible than eklund!) said columbus and anaheim are the front runners for bieksa.

Yeah but not their hotmail/gmail addresses! Now I can add them and chat and be bffs.

And have a word with Mr. Botchford about calling Tim Tebow a reach...

Yes he can be bought out, but why would the Canucks do that? Doesn't make sense.

Gah, it just never ends.

He should be back by Christmas, at least.

The big hope is that this doesn't derail the imminent trade of Bieksa, who simply has to be gotten the hell out of here.

Don't forget about Burrows, too. He might be late to the party as well.

Mmm, all that accumulated cap space!

I don't think we're in too much trouble. Lets be positive!!!!! At least Salo can't hurt anything else while he's out. Rest those shoulders and groins.

Ehrhoff
Hamhuis
Ballard
Edler
O'Brien
Rome
Alberts

Should be plenty to get us to late November.

This team would be perfect without Sammy Salo

lol.

that's really all there is to say to this, and the latest injury situation.

poor guy.

will be interesting to see what happens with the defence now, in terms of clearing out salary/bodies.

I could very well still see Bieksa traded, but with a more affordable 5-6 d-man coming back now. But at the same time, i could very well see Salo out until well into 2011, just returning to full game shape in time for a playoff run. If we could keep Bieksa, and have Salo coming off LTIR in time for a playoff run, we'd have an absolutely stunning d-corps.

Salo on the LTIR might free us up to pick up another forward on the UFA market if we go with SOB/Rome/Alberts as our 5/6/7 for the time being. Assuming he'll be back late November, a million might be taken off Salo's 3.5 million cap hit for the season. With the million plus whatever we have left for cap space, that might be enough for us to pick up another 3rd line winger.

LTIR really doesn't help us that much, it'll push us over the cap and when he comes back we have to free up cap space to fit him back into the lineup.

This move doesn't really mean that we have an extra 3.5M of cap space suddenly, it means we have less since we have to pay his replacement.

What I meant was that since we are able to replace Salo's salary for the time he misses, likely two months which probably will be around a million, it could possibly give us a discount on a free agent, since for the first two months, that free agent would just be taking up Salo's LTIR money. I could be wrong here, but that's how I understood it to be.

Like for example, we sign Torres to a 1.2 million 1 year contract. For the first two months, his salary, ~400k would be taken care of by Salo's LTIR, and the regular cap space assumes the rest of Torres' salary, around 800k then.

Sounds a lot more complicated when I start to type it out.

Unfortunately this isn't how it works. For sake of simplifying things we will say that Salo injures himself when the Canucks have zero dollars in cap room. Salo's cap hit is 3.5 million, so while he is on LTIR the Canucks have 3.5 million dollars of players playing Salo's place. Once he comes off the LTIR the Canucks have to be cap compliant, at zero dollars cap space. Because of the 3.5 million extra that the new players are using, the Canucks would then be 3.5 million over the cap.

So the time and cap space that Salo uses up on LTIR in no way lessen the Canucks yearly cap hit.

What if we signed Torres to the aforementioned contract, and traded SOB's 1.6 million contract when Salo came back? It's not like we need to carry 8 defensemen for salary cap purposes.

That would work.

This is why I think that all of Alberts, Rome, and Sweatt will see significant time on the Canucks (in the pressbox).

See:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m)
Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Jannik Hansen ($0.825m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.666m) / Tanner Glass ($0.625m)
Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m) / / Joel Perrault ($0.510m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Sami Salo ($3.500m)
Aaron Rome ($0.750m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.050m) / Lee Sweatt ($0.650m)

GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) /Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $90,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $55,725,000; BONUSES: $850,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $4,525,000

That leaves approx. 4,000,000 dollars for Raymond and a bottom six PKer, without Sweatt going up and down from Manitoba.

If he does it will open up well needed cap space. I was expecting him to be the #5 dman this season anyways.

People seem to be anxious to move KB, to the point that they are over-looking some pretty spotty play by Rome and Alberts. I'd rather keep the depth we have on D and cross that bridge when we come to it...

Spotty play from Rome @$750k = tolerable
Spotty play from Alberts @$1.050m = somewhat tolerable
Spotty play from Bieksa @$3.75m = So long, farewell, auf weidersehen, good-bye.
