I'll take another crack at this.

Trade Bieksa for Chimera and prospects/picks (Gustafsson plus?). Sign Halpern for about 800. Salo's out to start the season.

FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Mason Raymond ($2.550m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
* Jason Chimera ($1.875m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.667m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m)
Jannik Hansen ($0.825m) / * Jeff Halpern ($0.800m) / Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m)
Rick Rypien ($0.550m)
DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Shane O\'Brien ($1.600m) / Andrew Alberts ($1.050m)
Aaron Rome ($0.750m)
GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) / Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

ROSTER: 22; CAP:$59.4m; PAYROLL: $57.725m; CAP ROOM: $1.675m; BONUSES: $0.850m

Revised lineup if Schroeder makes the team. Salo still out to start.

FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Mason Raymond ($2.550m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Jordan Schroeder ($1.025m)
Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.667m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
* Jason Chimera ($1.875m) / * Jeff Halpern ($0.800m) / Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m)
Jannik Hansen ($0.825m) / Rick Rypien ($0.550m)
DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Shane O\'Brien ($1.600m) / Andrew Alberts ($1.050m)
Aaron Rome ($0.750m)
GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) / Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

ROSTER: 23; CAP:$59.4m; PAYROLL: $58.750m; CAP ROOM: $0.650m; BONUSES: $0.975m

Upon Salo's return, we make moves if necessary. O'Brien is the first to go (both scenarios), while Hansen is probably out as well if Schroeder makes the team (second scenario). We fit under the cap when fully healthy if we don't dress an extra forward (so Rypien is gone too) -- again, this is only if we are fully healthy.

Salo's salary still counts against the cap, so you may as well include him. We're able to exceed the cap while he's on LTIR.

Do people have more faith in Alberts now? I did see a few games where he wasn't horrible, but would dearly love to see Mitchell on that 3rd paring if we could afford it.

I don't think Hansen needs to be replaced on our bottom 6 (a few people have him in the press box on their ideal lineup). He's a solid player to have on our 3rd line, given certain line combos, and more than solid enough to be on our 4th.

Salo was accounted for. He was in there (on LTIR) in my mind.

I was never drinking the haterade regarding Alberts. I thought he took a while to adjust, and that the penalties that got him the nickname A Minor were only partially his fault. His size and eagerness to hit is nice, and he has a decent first pass. But if he's not doing well, Rome can step in. Mitchell would be nice, but doesn't fit in with the lineups I've dreamt up. That is unless Salo decided to retire, in which case we have room for a bottom pairing of Mitchell - O'Brien.

I don't really think Hansen needs to be replaced, but the second scenario generally goes with size, while both assume that Oreskovich is a success (as a fourth liner, mind you). Hansen could easily step in.

If Alberts can play well enough to just keep his head above water while providing some big hits then he'd be a steal. Can he do it though and are we willing to take the chance?

CAP SPACE (26-man roster): -$1,383,333

Yes, it is over the cap, but it is also a 26 man roster just to show the depth and acquisitions, plus Salo's LTIR makes it fine anyways.

Trades

Bieksa + Hordichuck to Ana for Festerling + Carter + 3rd round pick if Bieksa signs extension in ANA

O'Brien to CBJ for Murray + 2nd round pick

Not super exciting returns, but how can we expect much when both of these guys are on their final years? What we get back is a local young shutdown defender in Festerling, who can be called up or sent down without having to clear waivers, and two more versatile depth players, both reclamation projects on their final years. Ana gets Bieksa, who is almost certain to resign there to play with his old Moose coach Carlyle, and some more toughness in the bottom six in Hordichuck. CBJ gets another defender which they desperately need, they have made it clear that they will trade high picks for NHL players.

Resign Mitchell to one year, $2 million dollar contract.

Willie and Salo as the third pairing, priceless. Limit their minutes, try and keep the injuries down, but it would be just awesome to have what was considered one of the top veteran shut down pairings in the league as your bottom pairing would make this the best defensive group in the NHL.

What I also like about these moves is that they add so much versatility and competition to the bottom six, especially the fourth line. Rypien, Perrault, Orsetovich, Carter and Murray can all play center or one or both wings, add Bolduc, Tambellini, Glass and Bliznak and there is some major competition for the bottom four spots on the roster with Malhotra and Hansen the only real locks in the bottom six.

Personally, I expect Tambellini to surprise most here. He put up very similar numbers to Hansen last year, on a far worse team that he was clearly not happy to be on. I think that if anyone was going to benefit from the 'home town boost' this guy is primed, he is obviously a huge Canucks fan. He brings pretty much the same kind of game as Wellwood but on the wing, skates better and has a world class shot. He will also come in handy in shootouts.

As for Hodgson and Schroeder, I expect them to see a few NHL games this season, depending on injuries to the top six. If I was the Canucks management I would want to see both of these guys playing as much hockey as possible this year. Hodgson played just 24 games last year, while Schroeder's total of 61 games was the most he has ever played. It is better to have these guys getting top minutes and pp time in the AHL. I fully expect that they will dominate and possibly even lead the Moose to a Calder Cup. That confidence and team building will only make them and the rest of the kids in Manitoba better players in the long run.

As Gillis said when he took over the job, its about building a culture of winning throughout the organization.

Send a message via MSN to Edler Von Gud
the forward lines will likely be juggled around quite a bit in the regular season, but in the playoffs i'd like to see the following.

Sedin Sedin Sammy
Raymond Kesler Hodgson/Schroeder
Burrows Malholtra Asham
Hansen Hodgson/Schroeder Eager/Ward/Ruttu

Sedin - Sedin - Sammy
Raymond - Hodgson - Kariya
Burrows - Kesler - Schroeder
Hansen - Malhotra - Asham

Hamhuis - Ehrhoff
Edler - Ballard
Mitchell - Salo

Bobby Lou
Schneider

I think it offers a good selection of speed, skill, and depth. Toughness could be questioned, but have Ryp in the box, with maybe Glass as a call up.

1 Bonafide scoring line, 2 checking/scoring hybrid lines, 1 energy/checking line. A solid PP and PK.

I do understand cap restraints make this damn near impossible, but one can dream...

Here's what I'm liking at the moment-- seems to change every week, though
  • Bieksa for Chipchura + 3rd (modify the pick however would be reasonable-- hell, take it out if need be)
  • Sign Asham or Torres for somewhere between 900k and 1.1 mil
  • Salo on LTIR for cap relief
  • Possibly acquire Mitchell mid-season like Sundin? (or not)

Asham would make it a better 4th line, but Torres would be far better insurance in case anyone in the top 9 ever goes down.

FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Mason Raymond ($2.550m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.667m) / Jannik Hansen ($0.825m)
* Aaron Asham or Raffi Torres ($1.000m) / * Kyle Chipchura ($0.650m) / Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m)
Tanner Glass ($0.625m)

DEFENSEMEN
Keith Ballard ($4.200m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m)
Shane O\'Brien ($1.600m) / Sami Salo ($3.500m)
Aaron Rome ($0.750m)

If Mitchell could act as a free deadline acquisition type thing, that would be ideal.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Raymond - Kesler - Samuelsson
Malhotra - Hodgson - Hansen
Asham/Torres - Chipchura - Oreskovich

Ballard - Ehrhoff
Edler - Hamhuis
Mitchell - Salo

Luongo
Schneider

Spares going into the playoffs: O'Brien, Rome, Glass, Bolduc, etc.

Penalty Kill:
Burrows - Kesler
Raymond - Malhotra
Hansen - Chipchura

Edler - Hamhuis
Mitchell - Salo
(Ballard - Ehrhoff)

Now that would be awesome.

This is assuming we just sink Salo's salary in Manitoba and trade Bieksa+ for Morrow. A dream of mine mentioned in another thread. So what if we only have $435k? BRENDAN MORROW!
This team wins at least one cup.

The more I think about it, the more I think team would be better served if either Burrows or Samuelsson (probably Burrows given the fact he's a better player defensively) played on the 3rd line. If Hodgson makes the team I think Kesler would be a better centre for him than Malhotra, and the 3rd line will be way more effective with him off it, especially given the fact that another fairly raw player (Hansen) will probably be the other winger on it.

Sedin - Sedin - Samuelsson
Raymond - Kesler - Hodgson
Burrows - Malhotra - Hansen
Glass - Steckel - Oreskovich
Hordi/Rypien

Edler - Ehrhoff
Ballard - Hamhuis
O'Brien - Salo
Rome

Luongo
Schneider

IMO the Canucks are missing a couple of key things that could take them to the top. Ideally we'd be able to land another top six forward who can also play a physical game.

After that we need a fourth line center, maybe another fourth line player (Asham for example) and a right handed shooting depth defencemen.

So here's my ideal (somewhat realistic) lineup:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
Mason Raymond ($2.550m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Jannik Hansen ($0.825m)
Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.666m)
Arron Asham ($0.900m) / Jerred Smithson ($0.762m) / Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m)
Rick Rypien ($0.550m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Willie Mitchell ($1.500m) / Sami Salo ($3.500m)
Aaron Rome ($0.750m)

GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) /Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $90,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)

SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,152,500; BONUSES: $850,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,097,500

Trade Alberts, SOB, and Bieksa
Acquire Smithson (or equivalent player) as 4th line center
Sign Asham to a 2 year deal worth 900k per season
Sign Mitchell to a 1 year deal worth $1.5m (perhaps some bonuses as well)

All that team needs to do is add a top six forward later on in the season so that you can bump Hansen down to the 4th line.

That lineup right there IMO is gritty top six forward away from being a powerhouse in the West next season. Obviously health is a concern (especially with Mitchell and Salo on the bottom pair) but I feel comfortable with our depth the way it is to survive stretches here and there during the regular season.

I prefer that you set yourself up to be as good as possible heading into the season but I'd be comfortable with a situation where we are potentially one player away from being a very strong contender.

If we can get a 2nd round pick for Bieksa then it frees up the potential to trade a 1st round pick in a package (perhaps even including Schneider) to add that final top six forward.

Who know's maybe if we're lucky we'll find that player in our system.

Overall we're definately pretty close and if we can stay relatively healthy then things no doubt look good.

* Aaron Asham or Raffi Torres ($1.000m) / * Kyle Chipchura ($0.650m) / Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m)
Tanner Glass ($0.625m)

DEFENSEMEN
Keith Ballard ($4.200m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m)
Shane O\'Brien ($1.600m) / Sami Salo ($3.500m)
Aaron Rome ($0.750m)

GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) / Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
ROSTER: 22; CAP:$59.4m; PAYROLL: $59.225m; CAP ROOM: $0.175m; BONUSES: $0.850m

If Mitchell could act as a free deadline acquisition type thing, that would be ideal.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Raymond - Kesler - Samuelsson
Malhotra - Hodgson - Hansen
Asham/Torres - Chipchura - Oreskovich

Ballard - Ehrhoff
Edler - Hamhuis
Mitchell - Salo

Luongo
Schneider

Spares going into the playoffs: O'Brien, Rome, Glass, Bolduc, etc.

Penalty Kill:
Burrows - Kesler
Raymond - Malhotra
Hansen - Chipchura

Edler - Hamhuis
Mitchell - Salo
(Ballard - Ehrhoff)

Now that would be awesome.
Not even going to bother posting mine now, it's pretty much identical to this.

-Bieksa traded for a two 2nds or a 3rd and a prospect like Clark
-Sob traded for a 3rd

Assuming Coho steps up and plays well enough for a top 6 role

Sedin Sedin Sammy
Raymond Kesler Coho
Burrows Malhotra Hansen - ultimate checking line
Glass Rypien Asham
*Oreskovich, Hordi

Hamhuis Edler
Ballard Ehrhoff
Mitchell Salo
*Alberts, Rome

Hamhuis/edler..both play left side... Edler is probably more used to playing his off side
Ballard throws all his crazy hits from the left side and imo Ehrhoff is just as good on the rightside.
Coho could very well be top six material now...he showed the same promise as Stamkos at the skills camp thing....was just as good as his old linemate Duchane ...its his turn to make an impact in the league.
Dynamic potent top six. World class checkin line...tough 4thline and deepest top 8D in the league.

My lineup is best lineup in this thread assuming everything goes great cap and coho wise.

Some good lineups, what's reasonable and unreasonable to expect IMO:

UNREASONABLE

* Mitchell signs here with 3 other teams interested in his services

* Rome and Alberts to be among the best 6-7s in the league

* Edler's play on the right side will be as good as his left side play with Salo

* that Ballard & Hamhuis will be >> Mitchell and SOB

* that any mix of the current candidates translates into an improved 4th line

REASONABLE

* Canucks will have 3 solid lines

* Schroeder and/or Hodgson will make the team

* Luongo will be better w/o the Olympic "distraction"

* The D will improve simply because Bieksa is no longer back there

* 4th line needs an experienced NHL center; what RJ was advertised to be

The reasonable moves to make now would be:

* Trade Bieksa

* If Mitchell is not re-signed, keep SOB

* Sign an experienced center for the 4th line like Brendan Morrison

My favourite, full uninjured lineup assuming young players play up to potential:

Sedin, D | Sedin, H | Burrows
Raymond | Kesler | Samuelsson
Hodgson | Malhotra | Hansen
Glass | Chipchura | Asham
Oreskovich

Hamhuis | Ehrhoff
Ballard | Edler
Mitchell | Salo
Alberts, Rome

Luongo
Schneider

If Schroeder and Hodgson both make the team and Asham is indeed a Canuck, then this would be a nice opening night roster:

Sedin - Sedin - Samuelsson
Raymond - Kesler - Schroeder
Burrows - Malhotra - Hodgson
Asham - Bolduc - Oreskovich

Edler - Hamhuis
Ballard - Ehrhoff
Salo - Alberts

Luongo

Burrows probably wont be ready.

And neither is Salo.

Mitchell was about the same goals against on and off while facing quality of comp of a #1 between Ballard and Hamhuis. So its reasonable to say Mitchell > ballard or hamhuis.

SOB faced fairly low quality of competition equivalent to a 4/5 but had stellar #s (as did Ehrhoff) GA on the ice much lower than off. Worst pairing was actually Salo and Edler.

So its reasonable to say that Mitchell and SOB are almost as good as Ballard/Hamhuis, and unreasonable to say that Ballard/Hamhuis are much better.

And that is what we are looking at this season isn't it? Replacing Mitchell and SOB on the left side with Ballard and Hamhuis.
