Food Vendor Inspection Reports

In every sports venue in Pittsburgh, more the 50% of the vendors had health code violations. Awful. Let's look on the bright side though...at least we aren't Washington.

Quote:
Verizon Center
Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals
Vendors with critical violations: 100%
Inspection report excerpt: Mice droppings, a critical violation in Washington, were found at at least 10 vendors.

I'm not the slightest bit surprised. I expect a certain level of band-aids and rat turds in my nachos.

Its not exactly a level playing field though, each city has their own standards and their own practices...Pittsburgh is exceptionally brutal and they are intent on doing their searches in the heat of rushes...while Chicago (0%) does there's without a single soul in the building.

Going from the same company in Pittsburgh to Missoula to work food industry its amazing how lax the standards were here compared to Pittsburgh...half of my job back in Pittsburgh seemed to be on quality control while here it was just assumed that everything was good...mind you the potential issues were far less (I've never seen a mouse in Montana and insects have about a 6 week window of survival here...and even then their populations pale in comparison) but still. The slightest issue in Pittsburgh would result in a place getting written up even if it was just a suggestion to improve practices to near-impossible standards.

The amount of stands also plays into things...there's no way in hell Mellon Arena is cleaner than PNC Park. Heinz Field wouldn't surprise me, but PNC Park? Any way you cut it though...buying food at an arena is an exorbitant waste of money and you can't expect anything halfway edible. Maybe getting a Primanti's in the new arena will change my view, but the one at PNC Park is garbage in terms of quality.

Every single venue in Florida failed miserably. I suppose it has something to do with the heat and humidity?

Standards possibly being higher in Florida coupled with the heat and humidity which create issues in their own regard and the insects that come with it.

Listen, regardless of how well a place takes care of their food you are simply going to eat 'healthier' in a place like Bodø, Norway than in Anaheim or Sunshine.

Oh, these places aren't all being tested on the same criteria? I skimmed the article earlier today at work. I must have missed that part.

Standards differ greatly place-to-place...I mean what can be cited as a close-worthy offense is likely the same, but some places are much more liberal with their citations. In some places you can get a 'major citation' which is just a suggestion on how things could potentially be improved while it would go unnoticed in other places. Its hardly a level playing field and hence its impossible to take rankings like this serious...especially when Chicago gets a 0% for having their inspection without any fans in the building...no crap they're going to be on the top of their game when the only audience is health officials. Pittsburgh is quite severe on their rankings, but there are places that make Allegheny County Health officials look like patsies.

I wouldn't eat their food. Just sneak your own food in.

Oh, I understand that the standards vary. I just didn't realize that article was based on the local standards. I was thinking that some certain group of people just went around to all of these places and checked them out independent from local health codes or whatever.

It has to do with jack-wagon vendor management doing a **** job of following procedures and keeping their places clean between events.

I know Aramark runs Mellon, PNC, Heinz, and ran Duquesne. Needless to say, I've had very many experiences with that company and they really leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Sometimes health code violations are ridiculous technicalities. Like if you store a container that is sealed with one type of food in the same shelf as a sealed container with another type that isnt supposed to be on the same shelf then that's a violation.

I understand the intent and purposes behind these rules but many places take them way too far and if the same standards were applied to many people's home kitchens they would fail miserably but you don't see an epidemic of food borne illness striking people left and right.

I chuckle at Toronto's 0% for all facilities.

Recently at the SkyDome, I paid $44 for two beers and two sausage-on-a-buns.

It better be perfect for that frackin' price....
