No...I think we really need to ride our "strength down the middle" strategy since, you know, that's what we do. Have Mario center the fourth line.

Yeah, if Mario were used solely as a PP specialist on the LH side, he'd still put up very respectable numbers today.

I have no doubt that he'd outproduce Guerin. Too bad there's no way he's coming back.

The sad thing is he would score like 20 goals just playing 3 minutes a game and be the top threat on the powerplay...

You will want those ads if you want Shero to keep being able to spend to the cap every year. Hell I wish technology is advanced enough so that we can have ads floating in mid-air or something.

I am also speaking selfishly. As a sports marketing professional, my livelihood depends on sponsor activities such as these.

Is there any chance Sid hit's the open market as a UFA in a couple years? Leafs fans want to know. Thanks.

Possibly. But methinks Shero will probably trade him first if an exception package comes along.

Something along the line of Ryder, Halak and a 2nd.

If Leafs fans don't know the answer to that question, the are slower than I already believed. I guess I shouldn't expect anything less though. 3 years later and we're still doing Kaberle for Staal proposals.

Off topic, but do you think the pens just get those jackets made for the team?
Would totally wear one if they were available.

Do those ads bring money in for the Pens? I figured that those things would just be more revenue for FSN. I mean they already have sponsors for just about every stat and replay. I thought that was due to the network wanting to maximize their earnings. I didn't think the individual teams had all that much to do with the advertisements we see during the game.

Sponsorships are the fuel that makes the ship run.

It depends on the relationship between the deals the Pens have with the sponsors, AEG (CEC management corp) and FSN. I am assuming that there is some sort of triangulated sponsorship arrangement in place (likely). The "sponsors" for stats and replays that you speak of are not actually sponsors but presenting partners, and for most sports franchises these presenting partners come by that designation because they are already sponsors of the team or of any subsidiaries of the team, and its part of the sponsorship contractual terms for the team to help broker some sort of TV brand presence - hence the presenting partnership.

So in short, it all goes back to team sponsorship.

Ah, I see. So this means that we're going to have to keep listening to Bob and Steiggy make sandwich puns whenever the Subway segment comes up? Great.

We call this brand placement sound bites, and depending on the sponsorship tier, Subway probably paid handsomely for these name-drops.

Two questions, Elephant. Do you know Don Draper? And can you get me an autograph?

haha. Sorry can't help on either. But I've once had lunch with Steve McKenna and Wade Flaherty and may or may not have saved their half-chewed sweet-n-sour pork somewhere.

Ha! That's completely awesome, Steve McKenna was (and probably still is) the man. I think I would have eaten the pork to try to imbue myself with his power.

Last weekend was ‘Christmas in July’ and Penguins fans must have been good this year because they received quite the treat in their stockings on Tuesday afternoon.

Although nearly two months remain before the Penguins open CONSOL Energy Center Sept. 22 against the Detroit Red Wings, the freshly-installed ice surface at the Penguins’ new home was given its first test on Tuesday as Penguins Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux and team captain Sidney Crosby laced up the skates and officially christened the new rink with a brief skating session.

The seats look really slick, the dressing room too.
Oval dressing room, can't be common at all.

Sources tell me that Shero is close to signing Mario Lemieux to a 2 year, 1.6 million contract. Highly incentives based. More to come..

What a thrill for those kids to be able to go out there and skate around on the new ice with Sid and Mario.

Something that they will never forget, even if they live to be 100. Good stuff guys.
