He was a scratch on a Stanley cup caliber team..... I bet Modin wouldn't even make Pitts AHL team....

If you think their wingers are what made them a Cup caliber team then you haven't been paying attention.

Poni is better than Modin now but I would not mind keeping Modin around either, given it's on a cheap contract.

I guess I am ok with him as Modin's replacement...but that means they still need to replace or even upgrade Frolov, and add a d-man.

We need a guy who can pot 30-35 goals alongside Kopitar, there are a few guys out there who could be available, but they won't be cheap.

guess? what, because he is younger, better and cheaper?

I guess i would be ok with trading Parise for Smyth, you know because Parise is younger, cheaper and better, but im still not 100% sold.

Poni isn't Modins replacement anyway, Modin was a trade deadline aquisition who was brought in for 1 job, to help us in the playoffs. Now that is done, the team don't need Modin anymore. If he really needs a replacement for whatever reason, Parse is his replacement.

Poni is clearly Frolov's replacement. Yes he is worse, that is why he is getting paid less than what Froov earned last year

Easy there slugger.

I was simply referring to the fact that he will be on the Handzus line, which is where Modin was in the playoffs. It is refreshing to know that they still feel they need a winger on one of the scoring lines. I was a bit worried they expected a guy who has never scored 25 goals before to be the answer to our gaping hole on the wing.

And as for Parise and Smyth...Parise is a one-dimensional offensive player who was a product of Kovalchuk. Smyth is a pros pro who turned Kopitar from an Ivanans clone into a first line center. Plus Parise isn't a DL type of player, give me Smyth any day.

I don't see anyone piling on him. There's a few people who are glad to see him leave but for the most part we're all going to miss him.

All true, PLUS, you cant forget, Parise lacks the beautiful flowing locks of a certain Ryan Smyth

Once upon a time, Frolov was as good as Kopitar. Just sayin.

Now we get Poni, who in my estimation, won't last 40 games under Mr Terry.

(In best Jim Fox)

From the standpoint of the depth chart, Ponikarovsky is replacing Modin, not Frolov. The role of Frolov will be played by someone TBA whose name is not Scott Parse.

Well one good thing about this acquisition, is that no one has posted in the Devil Dude thread since 10:03 am.
I am fine with this as long as this is just the first move and not the big move.

Come again? Parise was playing a key role for NJ long before Kovalchuk ever showed up.

Needed to be done to replace Frolov's production and not risk setting back the further development of this team. Biggest plus I see out of this is that he will be in a contract year and apparently wants a long term deal here so no lack of motivation.

For better or worse, Frolov is the poster child of the lost decade of LA hockey known as the 2000s. He didn't appear upset enough to Lombardi for being on a losing hockey team for his entire career. I've mentioned it on here before, but I believe Frolov was like one of those UFAs that DL didn't want to sign because they want to play in LA for the weather and lifestyle; problem was that he was already signed and on the team. I truly believe DL thought he was just happy to be in LA: win or lose.

Doubtful.

It seems like Poni will at least start on the 3rd line.

Poni is utter *****, he completely shat the bed with Pittsburgh. This is the Ladislav Nagy signing all over again, in before he enters TM's doggy house.

Have you not noticed that except for Guerin, almost every line-mate of Crosby/Malkin has struggled?

I'm not saying he is gonna be anything special, but he'll be alright.

Well he did score 23 goals one year, clearly he's the missing piece!

No one's saying that, but he's not "utter ****." He's a useful player. Teams are not made of 23 40-goal scorers.

He will pot 20 and put up about 50 points, I don't see why people are so upset. I am so happy to see Jones and OD gone from the defense. I would rather the kids down in the AHL get a shot.

Not to mention Quick will not be forced to play 70 games again.

Poni will get his 23 goals, but not a hell of a lot else.

From most of what I've read and seen, he's a solid two-way player who will contribute more than just goals.
