I'm cool with it. LW depth to replace Frolov once it was a for sure that we couldn't get him back. I don;t mind the one year deal. What's the worst that happens? He ***** the bed this year and is off the books?
I'd pick Frolov over Ponikarovsky every day of the week, but it's better than nothing.
Fro's and Poni's last two season stats are nearly identical, so I look at this as a slightly lateral move. It's a one year deal, and that's for the best. Still leaves DL with plenty of options going into this season and the next.
Come on people, this is not a PR move. This is not a move to appease fans. This is a GM filling a hole. The signing happening mere hours after Frolov became a Ranger should be pretty telling of the fact that Lombardi was leaving the door open for Frolov to return. When the door shut, Dean went to option B for that opening.
Let's not read any more into it than that.
Being that he made $2.5m last year and had a cap hit of $2.1m, and that Frolov got $3m, I am going to guess that he signed for about $2.75.
While Frolov is definitely the more skilled player...it looks like Poni will bring a few more intangibles to the table. Plays the body a little bit more, better defensively, and good on the PK. Poni definitely seems more of a DL type than Frolov.

The only intangible that makes Ponikarovsky more palatable to the Kings management than Frolov has nothing to do with anything taking place on an ice sheet.
So we lost out on Gaborik, couldn't close on Martin or Kovalchuk and we end up with Ponikarovsky?
This is almost as bad as the Nagy, Calder, Preissing summer of 06.
Why do people ***** about the Nagy signing? It was a one year deal. It didn't work out, and we didn't lose cap space long term. That was a throw away rebuild year for us anyway. Calder? I don't think he was the signing that was supposed to get us back to the playoffs.
Both of those were stop-gap signings for the rebuild (which you all know we were in) yet you ***** about them like they were supposed to make us contenders and failed to do so.
How can some of you enjoy anything related to the Kings when you're so busy looking for things to gripe about?
Some days he has a hell of a shot, and is very quick. Other days he can't hit the net and refuses to break out with his speed.
Sometimes he uses his body, most of the time he doesn't.
Just don't make him a first liner, and it shouldn't be too bad. He is a good 2nd line option. He relies heavily on chemistry, and rarely can make plays on his own, so that also determines where he should be placed.
