Half this board wants pure heart. The other half wants Alexei Kovalev.

I'd settle for another Kunitz, but that's clearly not the sexy answer this offseason.

I'd take a RH Kunitz

And the fact that LA would rather give Poni that money and not Frolov speaks volumes, IMO.
Their contract talks with Kovalchuk fell through, and they no longer have Frolov. My guess is that at this point they'll take wtv they can get in order to somewhat fill the void up front.

I sure as hell don't want Kovalev unless it's for 2-3 million for no more than 2 years. Even at that though, this past season showed that he's nowhere near as dangerous a goal scorer as he once was. I'd be afraid that we'd merely end up getting stuck with another Guerin-like player.

They signed Poni just as Frolov was signing in NY. They could have just offered Frolov (a much better hockey player) the same contract and would have been way better off.

It wouldn't have made a difference, as Frolov probably just wanted to get out of LA.

The lack of interest was mutual between LA and Frolov, I don't think anybody expected him to be a King after this season.

The fact remains that Frolov in the right situation is a significantly better option than Ponikarovsky in any situation. Is there more downside with Frolov? I don't think we can say that's true based on what we saw from Poni last season. Frolov's worst season since his rookie year was still better production wise than Ponikarovsky's second best season. That should tell you something.

Kunitz would be considered one of the "heart" guys - a player who doesn't wow you with his offensive skills but plays a physical game and gives good effort.

With the cap situation the way it is, pure heart or a guy like Kovalev is just about the only choice the team has. You certainly aren't going to find a player who is all heart and very skilled offensively in our price range.

Kunitz is a 50-60 point player.

That's pretty damn good, and regardless of what people want to think, he has some pretty good skill. I think his playmaking ability is particularly underrated.

Kunitz is awesome.

If you don't agree, go ahead and try to find a 50-60 point winger who forechecks hard and plays good two way hockey for less than 3.725 million per season.

There aren't many out there.
