I really hope this is the two way contract. Glad Fraser will be coming back though.

Always liked Fraser, but I hope he put team first and signed a 2-way. If he did, I'm sure that would go a LONG way with Lou right now. And being on Lou's good side is a REALLY good place to be.

1 way

The contract is a one-way deal for $500,000.

“That’s OK with me because of where he’s at,” Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said. “He needs to clear waivers (to be sent down) anyway. He should be on our roster.”

meh, what can you do>? More or less the same as a 2-way with a 550k salary.

I didn't anticipate him getting sent down too often. He played 61 games last season, with a bunch of scratches and 0 games in the AHL. Hopefully he's ready to step it up for a full season.

Damnit so we have even more fodder in the lineup. Is salmela still alive cuz he would be too right?

Volchenkov, Greene, Tallinder, White, Salvador, Fraser, Salmela, maybe another rookie?

O god so much for Urbom and Corrente or Eckford making the team.

Screw this guy.

Lou did the practical thing though. Use him this year, then likely kick him to the curb.

well if he doesn't make the team out of camp and he starts in Albany it's not a problem right? He just gets paid the same as if he were up where Urbom will be.

At least it's for league minimum. Which makes it really confusing why he went to arbitration in the first place. Was it just that he wanted a one-way deal, and didn't care about the money?

not many players would mind making 500K in the AHL

This may mean one less rookie makes the team. That could be good, and that could be bad. It also makes Salvador even more expendable. That's probably a good thing.

Fraser does have some good potential as a defensive defenceman, and I guess it's always a good idea to retain assets when you can. Especially when it's a one year deal for league minimum, and he'd have to clear waivers anyway to get sent down, there's not too much to complain about. Now it means we absolutely have to move Rolston and Salvador for Kovy space though.

There can be only one reason, and that is he wants to play in the NHL and the NHL only. He's basically throwing his toys out of the crib on the organization and crying that he wont play in the AHL anymore. This also means, that he really doesnt care about the Devils and would rather play for Florida or Edmonton in the NHL than go back to the AHL and wait for a chance.

Salvo will be gone, so this isn't a real problem. Our D still looks good, we still have room for a rookie.

Volchenkov Greene
Tallinder Urbom
White Fraser
Salmela

That's not too bad, and we know the Devils like to run 7 D's. Salmela/Fraser could be flipped as well. It's also still possible Fraser becomes the sweetener for a Rolston deal.

Seriously? Panic and doom and gloom because an at best 6th/7th defenseman signed a league minimum contract? This has no bearing on whether Corrente, Urbom or Eckford make the team. What it most certainly means is Mike Mottau better look for work elsewhere. It's funny that people think these contracts are permanent. You know who else is on a 1 way? Rob Davison. I guess the Devils are going with 8 defensemen to start the season then? No. Davison will be waived. Fraser may end up waived. Salmella can be waived. Anyone making less than 1 mil is still fighting for a spot on this team whether they have a 1 way or 2 way contract.

That was what was reported as the sticking point to the contract, Fraser really just wanted a 1 way deal and was willing to go to arbitration to get it.

Why? I like Fraser but I'd rather see Corrente and one of Taormina and Eckford get a chance.

Expect trades. Too many young, promising defensemen for there not to be.

I don't know about that last part, but I agree that he really doesn't want to go back to the minors above all else. Can't say I blame him, he's already made the show. Who would want to go back down?

I think it's possible that he gets traded, or perhaps Salmela leaves. We know we have way too many NHL calibre defencemen now. However, what Trottier said about tempering our expectations is right. Lou is probably not likely to let two rookies make the defence on opening night, unless they really deserve it. And even then, he will have a backup plan in case they falter. I guess this is the backup plan.

I've said this before...He knows he's never getting a fair shake here in NJ, we're stockpiled with the type of D-man he is. He just wrote his ticket out of NJ, and he knows it.

He's a headstrong young kid with something to prove, and he's not going to get a chance to prove it here in Jersey.

Trust me on this one, this is straight from his mouth to my source. Very reliable.

Well, now a Salvador trade (for pick/prospects) gains $2.4M on the cap.

EDIT:
