Grebeshkov going to KHL

From Mirtle via Facebook:

James Mirtle: Spoke with Grebeshkov's agent Todd Diamond and can confirm he will play in KHL next season. No NHL out clause there.

Other sources indicate Grebeshkov offered Preds small discount on last year's salary to stay, but Nashville declined.

After acquiring Parent, I just didn't see the Preds keeping Grebs with the number of one-way contracts already doled out and the number of prospects pushing for a spot in training camp. The only way we see a veteran addition to the D corps is if we invite someone to training camp and they beat out everyone else.

I just believe Poile is ready to go into the season with:

Suter - Weber
Bouillon - Klein
Parent - Franson
Sulzer

and have Blum, Josi, Laakso, Palin, etc down in Milwaukee ready for a call...

Not sad about this at all. Oiler fans were glad to see him go because he was such a turnover machine. Too much money for too little return in my book.

Really don't understand all the hate this guy gets. He put some muscle on our anemic power play and now a third of the fan base is ready to shove him out the door.

If our power play comes in at under 18% and/or with Bouillon on it, it was a mistake to let Grebeshkov go, especially if Mirtle's tweet that Grebs was willing to come back for less than his QO was true.

Agreed. We're still looking at either a) putting Sullivan on the point on the PP(bad) or b)playing Bouillon with Franson on the PP(worse).

I had sincere hopes that we could get Grebs back, given that the effect he had on our PP was almost instantaneous. I'm not in the group that thinks Trotz assuming PP duties this year is going to be the magic cure-all.

It'a not hate. I just didn't think he was that great. And I would rather we spend our money elsewhere. I'm not convinced his presence on the PP would have offset his tendency to turn the puck over on a regular basis. I don't think Trotz running the PP is the sole answer either, the players have to execute on the ice. Slow decisions with the puck, poor player movement and slow releases don't help either.

How can you say that? He hardly played for us because of injury. If he had played all the games with us from when he got here and put up the numbers he did I'd agree but he was a decent guy who played the rest of a game after being hit in the mommy daddy button. I would've liked to have seen him back personally because he would've given us a boost on the PP and would alleviate Sully from having to play the point. As it is now we have 3 defensemen that will play on the PP and if god for bid one gets hurt, our PP is going to be hurting for sure.

In 47 games with the Oil this past season, he had 6/13, 1 PP goal and was a -16. Not worth 3 mil in my opinion.

That was with a very bad team. Name me one guy on Edmonton other than Penner that was any good.

If it came down to $2.8-3.0 for Grebs or the money for Lombardi and Parent .... bye Grebs. Not hate ... just looking for the best value for the money.

Quoted for truth, quoted for truth. Nashville has really 5 defensive pairing they can call on with the defenseman they currently have:

Weber-Suter
Klein-Boullion
Franson-Parent
Laakso-Sulzer
Blum-Josi

I also expect R. Ellis to get 9 games for his tryout. That will be 9 games you can spread out to give players some time off and rest their bodies. Also, there is the fact of in case of injuries you can call Ellis back from Juniors for emergencies.

Grebs is nice but I think Franson will be the man counted on for PP help. I'm also kinda interested to see how Trotz uses Kostitsyn on the PP. In juniors, he was used on the back line to feed passes to the forwards. Why not a pairing of Franson-Kostitsyn on the back line for the 2nd PP unit?

I liked what I saw out of this guy, but not at 3mil. It amazes me that he couldnt find an NHL team that would offer him 2.25 or so. he seemed like a very good player, and he could have helped out most teams defenses. We just didnt have room for him.

I think this would be a more legitimate concern if we didn't have so many NHL-ready defense-prospects who specialize in offensive skill. If say, Franson got hurt, Sulzer, Ellis or Josi could all step in and maybe even do a better job.

Not to mention SK can play the point on the PP. Hopefully that experiment is better than Sully......

I don't understand the confidence in why you think a player with very little NHL experience, one who has only played juniors and one who has never played on the smaller ice would do better than a player who has a year's NHL experience behind him. I don't disagree that the three you mention will be NHL players but most dmen don't come in and perform well right away.

I still don't think Sulzer makes the team. I guess he could come back from his injury and play better I just don't see it. They paid him NHL money last season to play for the
Ads, so he didn't have their confidence last year.

I think one of Blum, Laakso or Josi make it.

Weber can and will likely play at least 1:30 of most 2 minute PP's. Franson and Suter will help out and Klein will likely get some PP time as well unless we choose to use one of our forwards at the point.

Lots of options. Would've been nice if we brought back Grebs, but I don't think it makes or breaks the team or the PP...

I would've liked to have signed Grebs back at a discount, but Poile had a different idea. If the guy wants to jump to the KHL so he can pad stats in hopes of getting a deal later in the NHL more power to him.

SK can play on the PP. I think SK and Hornqvist will have good chemistry. You guys will love Sergei's saucer passes.

Why's that? If you think it's all line dancing and country bars you've never been on Broadway or 2nd Avenue.
