The only way I take Bieksa is if they take Spacek, and that's unlikely.

We could get Bieksa and then turn around to bury Spacek to the minor.

Hey Habs! Canucks fan coming in peace to say that Bieksa isn't nearly as bad as people say. He had a few great seasons (2x40point, 1x30 point, 1x20 point) but had two season ending skate cutting leg induced injuries which slowed his development.

He just needs to get back on track and he'll have a lot of upside. We've got a very calm system and he just needs an environment where he can be his usual old freewheeling self. Partner him with someone defensively responsible and he can do wonders.

Even in Hamilton, Spacek salary will count on the salary cap.

I know Nucks fans have talked bad about Bieksa, but I still think he isn't that bad and a change might do him some good, now if we acquire him we need to figure out how to ship Spacek away

Nope, just like Souray's over in Oil country... it no longer counts...that being said, he still gets paid by the club, to be in the minors...gotta have deep pocket owners...

I still don't think Habs organisation will put Spacek at almost 4M$ in the minors.....Come on you will have a bad reputation after that. They have to find a NHL team for him or a least put him in the waiver....and pay 1/3 or 1/2 ( dont remember) of his salary.

putting spacek in the minors wouldn't give us any cap relief IIRC

There were some quotes this summer from Bieksa and his agent (when the trade talk was in high-gear) where they stated they'd be interested in talking an extension with the team who acquired him (in fact they'd prefer it). I assume you'd get him for below his current salary on a longer term deal depending on how he finished the year.

I could see him being a good partner for Markov. He needs someone of that calibre to make him the best possible player.

Spacek signed his contract at 35,that why he still count on the cap.

The CBA also contains a 35-and-over rule, sometimes referred to as the Mogilny rule[5]. This rule states that if a player signs a multi-year deal when the player is 35 or older, starting in the second year of the contract, that amount will count towards the team's salary cap regardless of whether the player is on the active roster or not. This is designed to keep teams from signing older players to lucrative front-loaded contracts, thus saving cap room, in which there is no expectation the player will actually play in the latter years.

that depends on wether he signed his contract when he was 34 or when he was 35 no?

does it come into affect at what age you were PRIOR to signing the contract? or does the 35+ yr old thing apply to everybody who hits that age, even after he signed the contract as early as 5 years ago?

YEs his cap counts on the books because of his age. Montreal is stuck with that contract even if Spacek retires!

Oh, sorry, I hadn't realized he was 35+ on signing the contract...you are bang on...so he is not going to the minors...and I can't see a trade for Bieksa and Spacek, you take our problem, and we will take yours...

Eklund is only reporting what he has heard. I'd guess he heard wrong. Vancouver has already run out of defencemen and are playing AHLer Parent! There is no NHL defencemen hidden away on the Moose, either. Much as the board hates him, Bieksa is a fixture this season.

Dreger has reported Montreal and Vancouver talking, and has said Bieksa too.

It would have to be a trade with salary going both ways for it to work.

He's a legitimate top 4, we need one desperatly, he makes the team able to insert a blooming prospect on the squad la Weber next season.

Although they bash Bieksa a lot, I think he would do well beside Markov, he's made a lot of mediocre defencemen look good in his career. Hamrlik with Subban and G&G, Picard as a 7th. That wouldn't be too bad.

In Ek's post it said is pending on a returning injured Canuck...they have Ballard, Salo and Hamhuis all injured don't they right now?

Would love to see the Habs try to get Burrows, who is on the IR too. He is a top 6 player, and good for the media as they would be happy to see a Quebecer.

If it really is pending an injured Canuck coming back, it's probably Salo. The local media has been hinting Bieksa will be moved when Salo is close to coming back for two months now. Most people assumed that would be ~January but recently, there's been a lot of suggestions that Salo is quite ahead of schedule in recovering. No one seems to know for sure though.

It would take more than a king's ransom for Burrows to be traded. It's not going to happen.
