Nice trade by you guys, Wiz is a decent borderline #4/#5 dman, often goes for the big hit instead of the smart play, but maybe you guys can straighten out his style abit.
Good trade, our defense is improved from last year. If we can sign one more middle pairing defenseman, I think we have a decent chance at the playoffs. If we sign Sutton we will have a defense that has some toughness, and as a team we will be tougher to play against.
Streit-Hillen
Eaton-Wisniewski
Sutton-MacDonald
Not a terrible defense, now if we can acquire a top six forward like Kariya or Stempniak and Sutton I like our chances for the playoffs.
Paul Mara is still available. he is a solid 4-5 dman. i wish the rangers brought him back
Ducks management soured on Wisniewski, that's why he's gone. Had they gone to arbitration, they wouldn't have kept him on the roster. They've had to deal with the threat of arbitration both off-seasons that they've had him, Wis seems to think that he's worth a lot more than he is and doesn't mind holding out for it.
He's a decent player, but just wait till he's a UFA and see how he acts. He's got very little team loyalty when it comes to his paycheck. When the Ducks got him from the Hawks, we wondered too why they would give him up for so little. Right now, you're probably thinking whatever Ducks fans are just bitter, blah blah blah.
Seriously, just wait till it's time to negotiate a contract with him. you'll see.
Perhaps I am overreacting, but I would prefer just to be happy that we got a legitimate NHL defenseman for cheap before I figured out which prepubescent's rights we could get at the deadline.
The fact he's only signed for 1 year is a great thing. This guy plays like a wrecking ball & it leads to injuries all too often. I wouldn't want to be committed to a guy like that beyond a couple of years.
Can we call him Jimmy. There's not enough Jimmys in the NHL

Actually, its not a worry, at all.
You see, there are 82 games to be played. We tend to get ahead of ourselves here on hockeysfuture. And we have an annoying inability to focus on the present. If he walks after next season, so be it. This is the capped NHL, where mercenaries abound. You deal with it, when the time comes. Just as the Ducks did today.
In the meantime, NYI upgraded on D for the upcoming season.

Ya he is not bad, and would be another decent addition to the Isles blue line. There are several good players that can be had, Mitchell would be a great addition, and if he could stay healthy and play like he has when he was healthy, than the Isles would suddenly have a decent defense. I would love to add one of these defenseman Mitchell, Jovanovski, Bieksa, Sutton, or Barrett Jackman.
It's only July 31st and yet in the last 12 hours on this board, we see a thread pining for Larson, the latest potential overall #1 draft savior next June, and here thoughts about how NYI can "flip" a player it just acquired hours ago for...more futures.
And I'm criticized for pointing out the loser mentality endemic among a few in this fanbase?
About the only thing I can possibly think to criticize the trade is the asset management - namely, whether the price of a 3rd + 3.25M for Wisniewski was better than, say, spending $1m less on Shaone Morrison (perhaps less, as I do not have any idea of the value of the player right now) without giving up the third. But it's really splitting hairs as I am happy to have Wisniewski here. Lord knows the Isles needed an upgrade back there.
This is a solid move, this is the upgraded version of Freddy Meyer, more offense, less mistakes, and hits with a bigger body. Those that were clamoring for Meyer's resigning, will probably forget him after seeing Wiz right away.
I see the pairings like
Streit/MacDonald
Eaton/Wiz
Hillen/Jurcina
So I am thinking there has to be a trade in the works.
MacDonald is the 2nd guy, he works well with Streit
Jurcina was signed for a nice salary to be the big body to work alongside little man Hillen
Eaton and Wiz make a logical pairing
Martinek might not be near 100%... Gervais is probably on the market.
I am going to put it out there but I have a feeling the Islanders are working on Savard.
Anaheim getting rid of Wiz, means they are going hard on Kaberle.

As a poor schmuck who doesn't make anywhere near the same amount as pro athletes do, it bugs me when I hear of players holding out for more $. On the other hand though, these guys only have so much time to make their $ before they have to retire and go work in the Sears tire department like the rest of us. I say they should try to make whatever they can and they shouldn't be loyal to their franchises because the franchises are rarely loyal to them. Especially if they aren't a franchise caliber player.
Look at Witt. It's clearly the right move for the Isles to move on from him, but he can't hack it anymore and despite his contract the Isles are sending him packing.

The pick was expendable because of 2 reasons. 1) the Islanders already have another 3rd round pick and 2) with Jankowski gone there's not enough scouting staff to scout for more than 2 3rd round picks

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Shaone Morrisonn at all, but Wisniewski has a chance to be a legit top-4 guy. Morrisonn is more of a very good bottom pairing guy.
Shaone Morrisonn
12 pts. (team scored 381 goals) in 68 games averaging 17:34
James Wisniewski
30 pts. (team scored 238 goals) in 69 games averaging 24:21
Giving up a 3rd rounder for one year of Wisniewski is a good deal for a team that could use more meat in their defensive sandwich. (Ideally, we could use more legitimate top-2 quality meat, but those upgrades cost a lot more money/assets to obtain.)
I'm happy enough with our defense going into the season, and with legitimate prospects being on the horizon. I think it's possible that we could trade a player like Gervais to a team that needs cap relief.
In fact, I have no problem paying Jurcina $1 million to be our #7 while adding Morrisonn to be a #6. That said, I don't think we could trade enough d-men to reasonably add Morrisonn. I doubt we'd buyout Martinek. (His talent is greater than his durability. It must be hard for management to weigh Martinek's worth to the team.)
I still think somebody gets moved. 8 defenseman with the team is too much. Considering the minutes he's logged, I doubt Gervais would pass through waivers. If we do lose Gervais to waivers, that's because nobody wanted him in a trade. If we lose Kohn/Reese to waivers, it's just the cost of doing business.
My hope would be that Kohn and Reese (and others, including our top prospects) start at the Bridge (or juniors, if eligible), unless they win a spot over somebody who should be better.
All that said, I said our defense was serviceable when it had Jurcina as a #6. I think with Wiz we're closer to average for the NHL now.
We may be lagging behind our division, and we have plenty of uncertainty due to young and oft-injured players, but (on electronic paper) I think we've hit average. We've got some guys that can log some legitimate minutes now and a decent mix of skill and grit. Still lacking a bit in size from our more talented d-men. The hope would be that Hamonic helps there in the not-so-distant future.
Now if we can find a legitimate top-6 LW to start the season, I think we'll have done our due diligence. This would put the least amount of stress on our young lineup, while improving our chances for success this season.
Great trade! Getting an established Dman for virtually nothing is very sound work by Snow. Suddenly this defense looks much better! If only he manages to get rid of Gervais everyone will be happy!

And to add to this, if he is in fact as contract hungry as is made out, he'll have all the more motivation to have a great season in his UFA contract year. If we are out of it by deadline time and realize we can't extend him, and he's had a good season, then he will net us a good return in futures with the expiring contract. And if he helps us stay in it so we're still in the mix at the deadline, well, mission accomplished Garth, considering all we gave up was a 3rd.
All I know is that our blueline actually looks somewhat respectable now with the offseason additions, and if Andy Mac and Hillen can build on what they did last season, I am starting to believe we have a chance at the playoffs. Hope springs eternal
And if absolutely nothing else, I am at least confident that none of Gervais, Hamonic or De Haan will be in starting lineup.
The Islanders will have the option until June 1, 2011, to transfer to Anaheim their own third-round selection in the 2011 Entry Draft or Colorado's third-round selection, previously acquired by the Islanders.
The trade is conditional on Wisniewski passing a physical by 5 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Good trade
Streit, Eaton, and Wiz. feel much better about that top 3. I guess Martinek would round out the top 4?
Why is Martinek down played on this board.
When healthy (ok, that is an oxymoron) he is a very under rated skill player and solid defenseman who skates very well, has good positioning, and has much more offensive ability to offer than what he has shown. Plus he is a righty shot.
A healthy Martinek would be a real plus for this or any other defense in the NHL.
And if Wiz wanted to stick up for a teammate, go fight your fomer good buddy and former friend Seabs. He wouldn't turn down a fit over a hit he made if it was borderline.
Gotta believe this the prelude to another trade of some sort.
Exactly
Great Job by Snow getting Wisniewski ....how sweet it is
Wisniewski is a right handed shot which can be hard to find..... Some are already pairing him with Streit.
Doing flips here as This team is making big steps.
Witt Waived was a no brainer...or buyout to come
and Folks were wondering about getting to the Cap Floor...LOL
With all this D we would have to think another trade is on the way but we might have to give one of the more decent players like Hillen or Amac to land a big name.
Gervais is likely choice but if Wisniewski only gets a 3rd rounder Gervais at best is a 6th round pick.
Still would love Sharp on this team.....Slap the C right on the 28 yrs old chest...then we are talking
