With Markov injury for the beginning of the season, I think the battle is between Carle, Weber and Picard to make the team as a 7th d-man. So it's more depth. I like that signing.

Would it be a stretch to say that the Habs have one of the best D core's to learn from if you're a youngster?

Markov is Markov
Hamrlik mentored Phaneuf and appeared to continue his mentoring ways with Subban.
Spacek seems like an easy guy to get along with.
Gill obviously has leadership abilitiies.
Gorges has improved the last couple of years.

Maybe Picard can focus on learning from this group and progress. To be honest I thought Bergeron even got better as time went on.

I think this is a solid depth signing for the Habs. Picard is capable enough to play on the bottom pairing, has loads of skill and is still young enough to get better.

I liked watching him play for the Sens, but he gets a lot of flak for being soft in his own end and having more than the occasional brain fart. He can be frusterating to watch when he does something stupid, which he will, but if he learns to remain calm he has the potential to be a solid player.

Best of luck to him!

MAB is injured for a few months, so that's probably why he wasn't resigned. We had to go another way.

I'm not saying it's the best way to go, though... Like everyone else, I think Carle deserved a chance.

Picard is just competition at training camp. Carle, weber and picard will are try to make the team as 7th d-man. All on two-way contracts, so ultimately just depth.

We already had, what, 9 defensemen? Markov, Hamrlik, Subban, Spacek, Gill, Gorges, O'Byrne, Weber and Carle all of whom had to play with the big club this season? With Picard that's now 10. Either Weber or Carle are put on waivers or there's a trade coming. Weber and Carle were supposed to give the depth lost by Bergeron last season. A trade is in the works.

EDIT: It's a 2-way contract. That changes things.

This.

For the record, If PK Subban doesn't start the year with us... I will probably be a viral Youtube sensation like that kid who got his WoW account cancelled.

I would fully welcome a trade that see's Hamrlik or Spacek being sent out... I don't see this signing being a calling card for a trade being in the works though..

Picard would have to make drastic progression to make our blueline at any point in time.

Without Markov to start the season:

Hamrlik-Subban
Gill-Gorges
Spacek-O'Byrne
Weber/Carle/Picard.

Don't Weber and/or Carle have to pass through waivers to be sent down this season?

He will start the year here and battle with O'Byrnes for the 7 spot when Markov come back from injury. I guess the organisation don't trust Weber and Carle enough . Or maybe a trade is coming but I highly doubt that

a season without MABs, Traverses, Dandenaults is that too much to ask for?

Weber no. Carle I've heard yes and I've heard no.. We'll say he does have to.

O'Byrne is a more important player to this team then Picard will ever be, IMO.

Great signing. I think this moves allows Gauthier to trade Hamrlik or Spacek at one point this season, depending on how the team is doing.

Is this signing a meaningful addition to depth or sheer redundancy? I was hoping for an upgrade of the Dmen and Picard isn't exactly that. He's the 7-9 of Clubs, not the 10-Jack of Spades.

Some Bulldogs defensemen left from last year and there was still room to complete the roster. Besides, Cunneyworth mentionned he was hoping that management will add some more veteran presence. Picard as really good AHL stats and should be good for the Bulldogs.

He has experience and he'll likely play in Hamilton.

I think he is an upgrade over Belle and/or Benoit.

Good news for the Dogs, with Henry and Picard they will have some experience on the backend on what is shaping up to be a very young team.

I'm surprised he signed with a team with which he has a very slim chance of making it.

Market is tough for these type of players. We will see more and more of this I think.

I don't think anyone would want Harmlik for 5.5 millions but still that he would need to accept to remove his no-mouvement thing

But I thought Gauthier is a Queb hater...probably a move so he can get Bertrand Raymond off his back.
