I posted my thoughts on my blog, which you can read at http://hometownanalysis.blogspot.com. And this would also be my first entry as an official partner of these boards too.

I feel... so special now. *sniff*

is there a rule preventing the Canadiens from having a big, offensive, tough player?

If it's a matter of money then perhaps Gauthier should consider dumping a few of the smaller paid players who will never live up to much potential.

I wasn't impressed with this guy in ottawa at all. I hate to be harsh but he reminds me of Barry Richter. I suppose you cant be super fickle with depth signings though.

LOL - Barry Richter? I'm reminded more of Daryl Edestrand.

There is no room for him AT ALL in our lineup, come on boys. This is strictly in case of injuries and to bolster the Dogs lineup. Good depth signing. But Weber and Carle are still in the mix.

Anytime you can sign a dman with NHL experience to a 2 way deal, you're a winner. This adds depth in case we get hit by the injury truck.

We could basically have 4 injuries on D at the same time and still not be forced to play guys that have absolutely no business being there. By my count we have the regular 6 (markov, subban, gorges, gill, spacek and hammer) and the reserve dudes (O'byrne, Picard, Weber and Carle). Provided that Weber and Carle are still with us come october.

Spacegoat, Hammer, Subbanator, Gorgeous Gorges, Skillz Gill, Capt'n Picard,

Ryan O'bryne.

Markov then comes back and goes "I back. Me take picard spot. me score."

Picard goes to the minors. Martin doesn't like physical dman. O'bryne will always be the man out.

Well we better get rid of Martin before Tinordi shows up.

Good luck with Picard. So glad he's not with Ottawa anymore.

The difference between Sens and Habs is that Sens use him as an NHL d-man, Habs use him as a AHL d-man. See the depth difference

He's better than what some Sens fans will admit.

When training camp started last year, him and Carkner were the 7th and 8th defensemen on the roster. Then Kuba got injured, Lee got sent back down because of his 2 way contract and the Campoli-Karlsson pair got exposed. So Picard and Carkner became our second pair by default and they played very well for the first two months. There was that game against Nashville where he deflected two goals in his net and gave the puck away on the third one. From that point on, Sens fans started to say that he suck. Even when he recorded no Give aways and finish the game at +2. A bit like Brisebois would get criticize even when he was the best defenseman on that night.

So for the rest of the year, fans simply refused to give him any credit even though he was often the icetime leader. I think he plays better with more minutes. He was at his best when he was playing 20-24 mins last year. Unfortunately for him, Karlsson is the second coming of Christ for the Sens organization, so when EK got called back up, his spot was in danger and he started playing nervously.

I also think Ottawa's PP would've been a lot better than the 22nd in the league if Clouston had put Picard on the first unit instead of Kuba. But the organization invested a lot of money in Kuba, so he barely saw any PP time. He's no MAB on the PP but he is better in every other aspect of the game.

With all that said, I think he's going to put up a lot of number in Hamilton and be the first one called when your D has injuries.

I always liked him, I think he's gonna destroy the AHL and definitely be the first call-up, maybe outplay O'Byrne. I really like this signing, we might also be doing this to "cover" the eventual loss of Carle through waivers.

We can lose Picard through waivers too.

O'bryne and Picard bring two different things to the table.

Thinking about it, I think him signing here says a lot about his desire to play for the Habs, because he could've signed with teams that had a spot for him in the NHL.

O'Byrne, Weber and Carle all play the right side. Picard is left-handed and a viable replacement for Markov if he's not ready to start the year.

Please everyone read up on the rules! Or, if not interested in doing so, you can consult my sticky posts and those of habsprospects (formerly thief50).

Picard will be RFA after this year. The fact that Carolina did not qualify him does NOT liberate him prematurely from the CBA. Same exact thing for Dustin Boyd. They were UFA one-time, for now.

Picard becomes UFA in 2013, so long as his team keeps qualifying him or extending him. Boyd in 2014.
