Every lineup posted so far i see as very likely missing the playoffs..

I think we need a 3rd line center. At the moment we can't have either a scoring 3rd line or a shutdown 3rd line because our bottom-6 centers are mediocre. Someone like Belanger would improve this team a ton.

We also need 2 defensemen. One puckmover and one defensive defender. Kaberle/Bieksa and Regehr/Sarich/Salvador

Ryan Carter is perfect for the spot. Although he was waived, no one picked him up, so he is still property of the ducks. He is a good 2 way player, got a good shot and is one of the best face-off guys we have. And for a 700K price tag.

Ryan(??)-Getzlaf(5.325)-Perry(5.325)
Blake(4)-Koivu(2.5)-Selanne(???)
Beleskey(.667)-Marchant(1.125)-Lupul(4.25)
Voros(1)-Chipchura(.650)-Parros(.875)
Carter(.625)-Bodie(.500)
26.824 + ??+???

Visnovsky(5.6)-Lydman(3)
Sutton(2.125)-??(????)
Sbisa(.875)-Brookbank(.750)
Festerling(.525)
12.875+????

Hiller(4.5)
McBackup(.535)
5.035

Total=44.734+??+???+????

If we resign Ryan for 5 and Selanne for 2 that brings us to 51.734. We should easily be able to bring another 4 mill or so in to fill the last hole on defense. If we did something like Blake for Souray it would only add 1.4 mill. Or we can do picks/prospects for 1 of Salvador/Sarich/Bieksa.

Sure at 51 mil we would have plenty to sign another dman but I fear our Ducks have an internal cap. Blake for Souray would be great but I have a feeling Bob is done with this signing (apart from Ryan and Selanne that is).

Lupul-Getzlaf-Perry
Sexton-Koivu-Ryan
Kariya-Chipchura-Selanne
Bodie/Voros-Marchant-Parros

Lydman-Visnovsky
Sutton-Sbisa (I could see Andy contribute to Luca's game like he did Karlsson)
Brookbank-Mikkelson/Syvret

Don't view this as being demoted to the third line, that's not how three scoring lines work. Look at Philly, they just had three lines that contributed, bottom line. It wasn't about who was the number one line, it was about whoever scores gets the ice time. I could see Chipchura being an excellent center for this line. What Selanne and Kariya would need.

Just realized I left Blake out, let's say we traded him for Souray or Sarich or another overpaid defenseman for the second pairing and moved Sbisa down to the third pairing.

I'm still not a fan of 3 scoring lines. But if we signed Kariya and absolutely had to, here's what I'd go with:

Lupul-Getzlaf-Perry
Blake-Koivu-Ryan
Kariya-Marchant-Selanne
Bodie-Chipchura-Parros/Voros

Signing Kariya would pretty much eliminate one of Bodie or Beleskey from the roster (assuming both Lupul and Blake weren't traded).

Just out of curiosity, why not play Chipchura with Kariya and Selanne? I just think he'd be a better fit personally.

Internal cap has been rumored to be around 53-54 mill the last couple of years. So i would expect it to go up not down.

I don't see Chipchura as being a fit at all with someone like Selanne or Kariya. Marchant at least has speed to keep up with the two. Chipchura would be better suited in a grinding role.

That makes sense. My reasoning was Marchant on the fourth line with Bodie and Parros could be an effective checking line. And I think Marchant doesn't have the stamina to be put out there with them so much.

About where we stand today imo depending on camp results and injuries.
We are bank rolling an AHL Club this season; an internal cap will likely exist.
Bob doesn't have a lot of contracts left after Selanne/Ryan.

Hmm Bobby Ryan playing center? Very interesting/stupid.

What Will The Roster Look Like Opening Night

Okay, guys, I admit it: I'm trying to combine several threads into one. I hope it works.

Someone else recently posted an Ecklund thread. I read it, but, since it was dated June 11th (or thereabouts), I didn't find it that interesting. But, just for kicks, I turned to Ecklund's latest pronouncements.

I know that many of you are prone to dismiss Ecklund out of hand. I see your point: A lot of rumors, many of which are either wrong (guy goes elsewhere), don't come to fruition (i.e., no trade is made), extremely vague (mentions a prominent player, but no mention of what he might bring in exchange) or just out in left field. In his defense, most trade rumors don't pan out. That's because for every trade that is made, dozens are talked about. But even if Ecklund is out in left field, he does give you something to talk about.

In today's column, he's talking about Price to Anaheim. First, have any of you heard any of this elsewhere? If so, where? Second, does Anaheim have a need for a goalie of this calibre? Third, how good is Carey Price? He's 5 years or so younger than Hiller, but Hiller's still pretty young. What about the salary cap implications?

If there's any merit to this rumor, is there any chance of it being a huge trade which also would include a big-time defenseman? I know a lot of you love to blast Murray, but he's not a fool. By signing Sutton and trading Wisniewski [sp?], we're still in the same boat: i.e., woefully short on the blue line. (I realize that Sutton, at 35, is a temporary solution). Murray has something in mind. I can't believe it doesn't include getting some major help on the blue line. Somebody who can play a major role right away.

I just saw another post that said Willie Mitchell has said that he'll play for one of four teams. The Ducks weren't one of them. One less potential solution.

While the blue line is our primary sore spot, we still need some help up front. Anyone hear any significant rumors? Anyone have any viable solutions?

And, as you all know, we still haven't signed Bobby Ryan yet.

Finally---and this probably should be a separate thread---but what do you guys think of the NHL salary cap? By not signing Niemi, the Hawks now have rid themselves of (I believe) 9 guys who played on their Stanley Cup championship team. While the cap promotes equality---the NHL is pretty much the antithesis of Major League baseball---I can't imagine its purpose was to force good young teams to be broken up immediately after they win. (Don't forget, prior to last season, the last time the Hawks won was 1961).

Do we have any cap room to do anything more than sign Ryan? If not, how will Murray patch the holes?

The Ducks are basically done after Ryan and Selanne.
Other than Bob's "tinkering" ... how's that?

I get the (obvious) feeling that Sbisa is going to be counted on in a top four role, with Festerling, Mikkleson, Syvret, Fowler, and Mitera fighting for the last defenseman's spot. It's going to be interesting watching the young guys progress.

I think camp should be fun to watch this season.
Guys should be ramping up their effort to grab a spot.

I hoping for Sbisa to have a good season but I lightheartedly predict the "Sbisa sucks" threads (fair or not) will appear around November.
The NHL is a tough gig.

That's a fair, but disappointing, response, Mooseduck. That would leave far too many inexperienced and third-rate d-men in the lineup. If you're right, I see the team struggling to make the playoffs this season.

I am too. The first time I saw him play in person (here in Philly) I was impressed and it sounds like he keeps getting better. One of the best D prospects I've seen in a while.
