Any local press reports on this? I can't get to GR's website at the moment.
TSN claims the Sabres have waived Kennedy
Paul Hamilton Reporting
Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Tim Kennedy got a one year deal for one million dollars from an arbitrator on July 29th. The Sabres stated then they could not walk away from the award and now, TSN is reporting that Kennedy has been waived with the intent to buying the Buffalo native out. That would cost the hockey club $667,000. The Sabres do not buy players out as a rule.
We're still waiting for confirmation from the team.
I dont know, why would Regier say his roster was set? and then do this? Plus I fully believe they want Hect on the 3rd line at Left Wing. I know some love him on the Pominville line, but I think they want him with Grier.
Then in that case they better go and sign another Hecht to play in the top 6...
#1. Players under the age of 26 are subject to a 1/3 buyout, so the number of 333k total is correct
#2. Players who make under a million a year (i am assuming that this includes players who make exactly 1 million, like Kennedy) cannot be bought out later. So, if the team decided later this year to try to stash him in the minors, Buffalo would still be on the hook for the entire contract and would not have the buyout option.
So, their only chance to buyout this contract is now (post arbitration)
Which makes me doubt he was waived. I'll wait to hear from Kennedy, his agent or the Sabres confiming this before I get wound up about a very odd move.
I'm inclined to agree, but you have to believe that TSN has good league sources and there's no reason to make it up. Plus if Darcy said he won't comment until tomorrow, well that's a bit troubling as well.
