WGR550:

TSN claims the Sabres have waived Kennedy

Paul Hamilton Reporting

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Tim Kennedy got a one year deal for one million dollars from an arbitrator on July 29th. The Sabres stated then they could not walk away from the award and now, TSN is reporting that Kennedy has been waived with the intent to buying the Buffalo native out. That would cost the hockey club $667,000. The Sabres do not buy players out as a rule.

We're still waiting for confirmation from the team.

That sounds right but TSN mentioned something about it being only 333k because he was under 26.

If I'm correct, he gets 2/3 of the salary over twice the length of the deal... so $667K over 2 years or $333K per year for 2 years.

They are reporting on WGR that Regier told Paul Hamilton it happened. Regier is expected to comment on it soon.

So Kennedy is waived.

WGR says Regeir has confirmed waiving Kennedy. Regeir will comment on it tomorrow after the waiver period ends, tomorrow at noon.

Then in that case they better go and sign another Hecht to play in the top 6...

I am just as confused. They have to be making a move soon, but still a Kenndy buy-out makes no sense. You could easily trade Kennedy for a mid round pick.

CBA says a player under 26 gets 1/3 on a buyout, over 26 they get 2/3.

Why do they need to sign anyone?

So does another team claim Kennedy? Would they waive him and keep him on the team a la Mair?

But if we are making a serious acquisition... i would've rather traded Stafford for a pick/prospect... then pay to get rid of Kennedy
All we know for certain is that Kennedy has been waived; the buyout stuff, however, is pure speculation.

Waiving TK makes sense if Regier is clearing roster space for a trade, or if he wants to send TK a message (like, you're overpaid and nobody else wants you).

But a buyout of a productive asset who is perhaps a couple hundred K overpaid? Not in Regier's universe.

Drat! That's 20 hours to try to come up with a reasonable explanation!

because 2 of those guys aren't proven top 6 forwards, and 2 others are injury prone...

Not if he tried to trade Kennedy all weekend and nobody bit on his salary.

If the Sabres buy him out that means that nobody else wanted him at a million dollars either.

Remember that.

So, thinking about this (and reading the CBA)

#1. Players under the age of 26 are subject to a 1/3 buyout, so the number of 333k total is correct
#2. Players who make under a million a year (i am assuming that this includes players who make exactly 1 million, like Kennedy) cannot be bought out later. So, if the team decided later this year to try to stash him in the minors, Buffalo would still be on the hook for the entire contract and would not have the buyout option.

So, their only chance to buyout this contract is now (post arbitration)

I'm inclined to agree, but you have to believe that TSN has good league sources and there's no reason to make it up. Plus if Darcy said he won't comment until tomorrow, well that's a bit troubling as well.

Because it's fugly.
3 players have broken 80p
4 of them have broken 65 points
1 is a 2/3rd line player (Staff infection)
1 has unproven but was extremely effective in his limited action.

Myers was unproven last year but proved to be our most important D man. Not saying Ennis will have that type of season, but 55-60 points is not outside of the realm of possibility.
