Rangers Prospect Poll #16

Following an epic neck and neck race, Mikhail Pashnin came out on top for the #15 spot. A 7th round pick, Pashnin was selected 1st overall in the 2009 KHL draft. He plays for CSKA Moscow and is coached by former Stanley Cup winning Ranger Sergei Nemchinov. He had an impressive prospect camp garnering a "first star" slap on the back from a cigar chomping Glen Sather after one of the scrimmages. Read more about Pashnin at squishy's website.

I'm going Byers again.

It's getting hard to decide who to nominate for the add. I guess I'll go with Dupont. He strikes be as someone capable of playing a Brandon Prust type of game. He's going to be most hindered by players ahead of him but at this point in the poll, I think so will everyone else. Also, not sure if his skating has gotten any better... I can be convinced to change my nom.

If it was neck and neck why isn't Byers #16? No logic.

The voting was for spot 15. A lot of people don't like Byers. If everyone that voted for Pashnin last round decided to vote for Kundratek in this poll, then Kundratek would win and Byers would again be a runner up.

There's plenty of logic there.

As much as I like Byers, I think Horak has the higher upside so he got my vote.

Add Williams

Voted for Fasth because I like him... not sure if he's actually our #16 prospect, but I like him... Add Baldwin.

Traditionally, we've only given the loser of a tie-breaker automatic placing if he had way more votes than the 3rd place guy. Byers at 24 and Horak at 18 didn't seem like a big enough spread to warrant him #16 automatically. This was my thinking.

Appreciate the explanation n8, but I still disagree with the thinking... Considering how tight the tiebreaker was and how the 6 vote spread between Byers/Pashnin and Horak was sizeable enough, we should've just moved on to 17. Seems like Byers is catching a raw deal, so hopefully he wins this one.

Niemi add Williams.

I know Byers is a fan fav and I like him too, but he's just not much of a realistic prospect. To my knowledge, he's never played in the WJC (U18, but not U20). Niemi and Kundratek have and played well. Maybe the argument could be said that the Canadian team is more competitive to get on to but still, at younger ages, both of those younger D men have positive upside and Byers has shown that he can't keep up at the NHL level. With Avery and Prust, Byers is sealed in the AHL. Kundratek and Niemi are AHL ready and have room to develop. Both have potential to reach the NHL. At most, they cap out at AHLers which is where Byers has capped out at. As prospects go, there's no way, Byers should be ahead of these two.

MDZ couldn't make the Canadian WJC team either. Sanguinetti never made the USA WJC team. There's a good chance that McIlrath won't make the Canadian one. Does that mean that Kundratek or Niemi are more likely to become better players than those three? As well it is not unusual for very good CHL players not becoming good AHL players. Byers was a fairly good WHL'er who's become a very good AHL'er. What's more--he's coming off a really good year when you consider the ACL injury that pretty much obliterated the season previous to that. Personally I think Kundratek's got a decent chance of becoming a 5-6 NHL d-man but he's no sure thing and he's got a number of young players (Staal, MDZ, McDonagh, Gilroy, Valentenko, Sauer) in front of him. Niemi, right now is a longer shot. Neither of them IMO have higher upside than Byers does (Kundratek may be equal) and Byers is a more developed player.

Because of his name and from what I have read, he could become a decent player

For some reason we all seem drawn to cheering for him.
