at maddens age he either

1) goes for money
2) cup contender
3) retire

in my opinion it can only be one or the other. most cup contenders are tight against the cap so they cant overpay for madden.

Madden has really slowed down, believe us when we tell you that. I like Madden, I always have, but he really isn't cut for the 3rd line anymore. He's still great at winning faceoffs and PKing, as well as mentoring younger players. No doubt he was a reason the Hawks went all the way this year. Madden has Stanley Cups with the Devils and Blackhawks on his resume. That alone might attract a team, for experience and being a proven winner.

If he signs somewhere to be the 4th line center, that's exactly where you want to use him. Montreal could use him. The Devils might even be interested in bringing him back; he played most of his career for them and Lou has a history of bringing back players (Arnott, Shanahan, Holik, Rolston, etc.). I think in reality though he'd like to play for a team he has played for before, one of New Jersey or Chicago. If Chicago can keep him, I'm sure he re-signs there. If not, I think he gets a call from Lou eventually. Retiring as a Devil would make a lot of sense if he gets that opportunity.

I will be a broken record, but I don't see Lapierre as a center. I find Boyd a bit iffy there. And Eller hasn't really played in the NHL yet. So "jammed" is kind of the opposite here for me. We have a plethora of options and backup plans, true... just not a lot that can be relied on. Madden as the 4th/5th line center would be a nice insurance policy, if nothing else. I'm thinking we're going to find a need for that insurance policy before the season is out.

If hed sign for around the legue minimum I wouldnt mind him back on the Hawks but I dont expect that to happen..

But sentimentally I would like to see him go back to the Devils and close out his career there like Savard did for the Hawks. He should retire there and get a job with the org. afterwards.

He will always be thought of warmly for his stint in Chicago.

Don't most players try to get to at least one of those points?

I highly respect Shelley - he never has backed down from a fight, and he performs in the clutch (look at his performance in the home-and-home to end the 2009-10 season).

I'd give him 1.1M before I'd give it to that worthless coward named Daniel Carcillo anyday.

I called Madden to the Leafs awhile ago. Im sticking by that. Seeing how his family is here & some people that are close with him of have mentioned that John would like to retire a Maple Leaf. I just don't know if Burke is calling him at this time. I certainly hope he is as it would make our PK pretty damn good w/ him & Sjostrom.

i dont see many teams paying 2.5 mil(last years cap hit) for a 3rd line center on the decline.

i would love to see him in SJ for the pk and the faceoff circle. It would only be practical if we can sign him for 1mil<

Personally, I doubt he comes back to the Hawks

Think he retires after being a Dev for a year or too more

For some reason I'm worried about Vancouver getting him

Vancouver could use him as a 4th line center.

He seems to be a fan of the Vancouver nightlife lol

I've been wondering about what's been going on. Maybe he's been holding out to see if the Hawks would eventually have space for him.

Thoughts?
I would be surprised to see him in Edmonton, but if the Oilers for some reason don't want Cogliano I'd be happy to hear about Edmonton overpaying him to have his services for a year.

Could he turn down 1 year 4 million? 5 million? He's the kind of checking line center we've been lacking for a very long time. I know that's a retarded amount of money to throw his way, but we've got the cap space and it would only be a 1 year deal.

It's not going to happen though.

Does San Jose have space? That seems like a good destination for him if he wants to win IMO.

Stan Bowman said earlier that they're looking for some cheap defensemen, but if they have some room for one more forward, they'll look into Madden. He didn't sound too optomistic, though.

he trashed lou and the organization? the only thing i remember him saying about new jersey was that it was always serious in the locker room and the hawks had a more fun atmosphere.

Uh, no they aren't. They already have Sammy Pahlsson, and are spending way more money on their 3rd and 4th lines than any sane team should.

Blair Betts is one of the best PK-guys out there, doesn't get enough love.

I think Madden will either retire or sign relatively cheap on a contender.
