A public event that’s generated a lot of interest in Thunder Bay has had to be cancelled.
The Brian Burke and Friends Luncheon in support of Special Olympics was scheduled for this Thursday at Fort William Historical Park. Event organizer Tony LaChimea said the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager was called away on hockey business, and will not be able to make the event.
All 300 tickets for the luncheon had been sold out at $60 each. The event was also to feature a number of local hockey stars.
Tony LaChimea, a luncheon organizer, said they will try to reschedule the event, but added that everyone will be given full refunds.
The Ontario Winter Special Olympics are being hosted in Thunder Bay in January. The cancellation of the luncheon is a significant setback to the fundraising efforts for the event, and LaChimea is encouraging city residents to continue to donate or volunteer to make the event a success.
Update: LeafsNews has learned that Brian Burke has cancelled the event to travel to Europe to negotiate a contract with a prospective player – yet to be named.
Who could it be? Forsberg?
Kudos to MapleLeafs38 and Captain Sexton for breaking the news on the Leafs board.
It's supposed to be "cancels" not "cancel's". I'll let the "chairty" go because it's probably just a typo.
I think Burke just likes going to Europe on Toronto's dollar. He went last year to sign Gustavsson didn't he?
It worked didn't it? He beat out several teams to get Gustavsson last year and already has flown to Europe this year to convince Marcel Mueller to sign with the Leafs over the other 5 NHL teams who were interested.
Yes, but the whole point is that he's canceling a charity event to go to Europe. It should mean that its going to be fairly big signing...
I really think that people are making too big a deal over the charity event cancelation. Any legitimate hockey business that Burke feels he should deal with himself should come before any charity appearance.
Ya, exactly. Why would he join and why would we want him? He would need to play a complimentary, he can't be the star of a team anymore. He should be going to a team that has a legitimate chance of competing for the cup this year.
Truth: Brian Burke cancelled charity event in Thunder Bay to attend to Leaf-related business.
Speculation from an unreputable source: He's going to europe to sign a player.
You guys need to learn how to decipher fact from reality. Here's an example of an advertising-based website, that finds an article in the local Thunder Bay paper about Burke having to cancel the event. They tack on a piece of information and call the article their own, making it seem like the entire article is legit and draw hits to their website. In turn, this drives dollars to their bank account.
