Isles put three year 9 mil offer on table for Stempniak
I'm sure people will whine that it's too much in either term or cash, but I don't think so. He's arguably the best name left standing, still young and he could be a solid 25-30 goal top 6 forward.
He is the best man standing but he is also amongst the biggest question marks.
I have him in my maybe category.
I simply don't know enough about him. In Toronto he looked like a straight up perimeter player that was afraid to get dirty. Thats what scares me. If you pay him this much and it is clear its a bust it is pretty hard to a) move him and or b) move his position on the depth chart. I mean you are not going to pay a guy 3 million per to play the 4th line.
We'll see. I certainly would not at all be disappointed if he rejects this offer.
I'm very leery about going after guys who have their career year the season before they're set to be a UFA. He's only scored 20 goals twice in his career. I wouldn't be thrilled to add him. Especially at that $.
I don't trust the source on this one at all. I'd be happy if it were true though--Stempniak is a smart offensive player, a good finisher, and would fit nicely on Tavares' wing. His acquisition would also ensure that Petrov and Neiderreiter aren't rushed into the lineup this season.
Plus, he's a Dartmouth man
3 years at $9.5 million is steep though, especially considering that there doesn't appear to be much of a market for his services.

He was god awful in Toronto and great in Phoenix. Think he could be decent on the same line as JT.
Not really worried if we overpay. It's not like giving Lee Stempniak 9.5 million is going to hurt our cap situation, it's just a question of whether that money could be better spent elsewhere.
I'm putting a lot of faith in Snow right now because I feel 3M per is a lot for a guy who doesn't produce goals. Hopefully playing with JT can change that.
Since we already have had trouble bringing FA's to the island, they have to throw Stempniak an offer he "can't refuse". We'll just have to wait and see how this goes. Very interesting.
It's really not so much the price tag that worries me as much as the length. Stempniak is a wild card at best and that's not the type of player you want to commit three years to.

alot of question marks but 28 goals is 28 goals...
His ridiculously high shooting % for the Coyotes (where he score half his 28) leads me to believe that kind of scoring isn't sustainable. He also disappeared in the playoffs.
He's a decent enough player, I suppose, but he's also another soft, perimeter guy. Is that worth a 3 year commitment at $3m?

I agree on Stempniak. While he was a disappointment in Toronto and had a hot streak in Phoenix - I think the real Lee Stempniak is somewhere in between.
He's got speed, good skill, good vision, ok shot, works hard, fairly consistent, no bad penalties, not a first line player, borderline 2nd line/3rd line on a good team.
He could be a good complimentary winger on the Islanders because he brings speed and offense - two things severely lacking on the Islanders.
I don't think he's worth 3 years or 9.5million, I don't think he'll earn that much in the open market but time will tell. (I don't put much faith in the rumored #s/term but the merits of the player on this Isles team does make sense)
I'd certainly give him a two year deal, 4-5 million. I don't think he'll get more than that, I'd be shocked if he gets $3MM per year over 3 years. Good player but probably (hopefully) not better than what we'll see out of Comeau and Moulson this season.
I'd take him at this point just for his skating alone. I'd rather see a 2 year 6 million deal. The extra year wouldn't bother me that much since he would only be 29/30 at the end of the deal.
I've got no problem with us signing Stempniak. Not holding my breath until I read it is official, but even if it is 3 years for $3 mil a season, it's not my money, I've got no problem with it. Stempniak is a solid player, sound defensively, hard worker, and I would rather us sign a guy like that than a loafer like Frolov or Afinogenov.
