NHLPA embarrases themselves once again. First the Kelly debacle and now this. How the hell can the PA defend this crap?

Dearest Lou,

Sucks to have someone tell YOU who YOU can't sign HUH?! Imagine if you also lost draft picks, or even a top player because of who YOU want to sign.

XOXO,

The Flyers can just pay another team to take Pronger and his contract. A team that is looking to make the salary floor, or that doesn't care about cap space issues.

Reminiscent of the Gerber/pick for crap players trade that the leafs made.

Although the league could void that trade...but when is the last time that happened ?

It was Kolzig not Gerber.

The Leafs acquired Gerber off of recall waivers from the Sens.

They could just take the last 5 years off the contract and make it 12 years. Then sign him to league min for 5 years after the 12 years are up.

Anyone who thinks that the league will do something about Hossa's, Luongo's, or Pronger's deal is delusional. Hawks just won a cup, imagine the PR nightmare this would become for the NHL. It's just not going to happen.

As I pointed out before, the NHLPA had to be lukewarm participants in this at best. I am sure that they felt that they had to challenge this. But in fact these contracts are bad for the vast majority of the NHLPA's members. Set percentage of revenues, so if Kovalchuk and the Devils game the system, it comes directly out of the pockets of the other players for as long as the game goes on. I doubt that the NHLPA is shedding any tears over the outcome.

This will make it very hard for NJ to just take off 2 years and re-submit. They will need to completely re-work the structure of any new deal and I wonder what Kovalchuk will think of that?

He will get no where near $100/10 years anymore from an NHL team.

Great idea! What's the cap hit for those 12 years again?

They punished the Leafs for Jonas Frogren's contract after accepting it and the player was 8 months playing under it.

To put some actual numbers to my thoughts, I doubt that anything close to the 2.5% for the last five years of the aggregate deal that the rejected contract contained would fly. If the Devils want a 15 year deal that would be fine, but it would have to be something like:

8
8
8
8
8
8
8
8
8
8
7
5
4
3
3

Anything other than something like the above, I do not see it. 21.5% of the contract the last five years would make it less easy to walk away from, therefore more reasonable. I really do think that the league is looking at that, and the arbitor as well, cap circumvention. If structured something like I set forth above the NHL would be fine with it. If not, I doubt it is.

No he won't. Either he re-signs to a REASONABLE amount or he can go to Russia and NEVER Come back.

It's his choice...

I'm sure the Leafs also won the cup. The worst that could happen is fines to the teams involved — money, picks, whatever. Nothing will happen to the contracts, unless you think the league will also void Chicago's cup.
