sorry, but carolina grossly needs tim gleason. it would take more than clowe to pry him from them. plus they already have ruutu who can fill clowe's role

A second line left wing for a first pairing defenseman doesn't sound very fair to me. Adding a draft pick doesn't really change much, either.

I don't think they would consider Tim Gleason an untouchable by any means. He's solid but not great.

That being said I dont think the trade is bad in value it just doesn't make sense for Carolina to trade one of their better Dmen at this point.

Gleason is barely better than Mitchell if at all. The sharks are rumored to be interested in Mitchell.

Clowe+Mitchell>Gleason BY FAR.

so why not just sign Mitchell? Its more realistic and better for the sharks.

btw Carolina would probably not do this considering Gleason is one of their only solid top 4 defenseman (defensively)

Canes fans totally overrate gleason because they traded jack johnson to get him. That trade still stuns me today.

Also everybody over-appreciates toughness. The guy hits but has some of the worst offensive skills of any top pairing dman ever.

Worse than the first, which was pretty bad in it's own right.

Gleason's about as untouchable as you can get without going into the "Asking for Staal" territory.

He may be slightly overrated by the fanbase, but the sheer fact that he's the only defensive-minded defenseman the team's got, it's going to take a lot more than Clowe to get him.

But Pitkanen is essentially a rental...

If JR plans on making him a rental, then we could get a lot better than Clowe+2nd.

As generous as your offer may seem, joni is the engine of carolina's pp and has really turned into a well rounded top pairing defenseman, and I doubt they intend to just let him walk after this year.

Pass, it makes no sense from a Canes' perspective. They have only one physical Dman in the top 6 and nobody in the system to step in. It may fill a SJ need but one for Carolina. As such it would require overpayment to even be considered and this isn't overpayment.

That may have been true at one point but it isn't now. Toughness is a legit issue and the Canes have it in short supply. Gleason isn't going to be confused with an offensive-D but your comment is absurd.

Rutherford does in fact consider Gleason an untouchable. He's a first pairing defensemen who logs alot of minutes for us. It'll take more than Clowe to pry him away.

Tim Gleason is a DEFENSIVE defensemen. Who gives a crap if he puts up horrible offensive numbers. Carolina has plenty of defensemen who can put up offesnive numbers: Pitkanen, Corvo, Babchuk, McBain. What they don't have are defensemen who can actually be defensive, which Tim Gleason is.

As for the original deal (Gleason/Clowe), value wise it really isn't that bad, but as many people have said, does not make sense for Canes. We have Ruutu who is like Clowe and Gleason is a heart and soul, do anything for his teammates, warrior on D. The Canes, nor do many other teams, have players like that and the Canes need his toughness, physicality, and team first attitude. As for the comment on his offensive abilities, just a "who cares" kind of comment. He does have some offensive ability but on the Canes he won't be asked to use them due to Corvo, Pitkanen, Babchuk, McBain. The Canes don't expect, nor need, him to put up points and no one said he was an offensive defenseman.

The second deal, Rutherford will wait and assess the team at trade deadline and get a feel for if he can sign Pitkanen. If he can't and team is not in playoffs, then he could be moved. As for what he could get for him, too early to tell what the market will be at this point.

Why is that exactly? That trade turned out to be a very even trade. We don't need to overrate Gleason because he is vital to our team, he is our only defensive minded defenseman.
