The only way I will think it's a real possibility, is if NJ gets a penalty of $3M+.

Hearing some rumblings of a possible "core" player involved in an upcoming trade. Rumor #2,Owners still want Kovy. DL will try again asap.

Although when Broduer retires (2 - 4 yrs from now?), that will free up some $$. But that sure ain't helping them right now is it?
Dont get me wrong..its still very possible to round out a good core...since Arnott,Lagenbrunner, Hedberg will come off the books next year (9 mill)..

If they do sign kovy to a 7 mill cap hit, and pairse to a similar deal...then next year they will be in the same boat with no significant capspace to improve thier defense. Plus it opens up Offer sheets on Zach...

What's going to be fun to watch now is the paranoia that will exist on the Devils' board if Kovalchuk goes several days without signing a new deal with NJ.

Where exactly do you hear these rumors..............

I'm pretty sure Kovalchuk will die for signing at the Kings when Lombardi was heard as whitness to destroy his dream.

My favorite part of this whole drama is how steadfast the NJ fans are in their beliefs.

First it was that Lou wouldn't use a "retirement" contract: Wrong.

Then it was that the NHL would never reject the contract: Wrong.

Then it was Lou wouldn't do a press conference if he knew it was going to be rejected: Wrong.

Then it was that the arbitrator would agree with the NHLPA: Wrong.

Now it is that the Devils will not be fined and will re-sign Kovalchuk easily: ???.

Gotta admire their loyalty to the cause.

We all know what Kovalchuk is, now it's just a question of negotiating a price.

I don't think the guy cares in the least about anything but money.

haha for real. I'd have ate my plate of crow after the 2nd step then just kept my trap shut and watched it unfold. Instead some of them are looking pretty foolish.

I loved this: "but I think Kovy painted himself into a corner with that Press Conference 'cause now he pretty much has to re-sign with NJ."

sure he did hahaha

But it would be interesting if he had to pick between very similar offers. I say that because I don't imagine that NJ will just take off 4 years but still give him $102M. I would think they would offer $6-6.5 for 13 years, which Dean could do no harm by throwing his offer back out there.

He and all of us have no idea of what DL said and if it altered the outcome of the decision.

I think that Kovy really has second thoughts about what he said on the press conference.

I'm not sure...........................
If that would be the case he would accepted the 100 Mill offer from Atlanta 1 year ago.

I would like to see if LA offered the same deal as NJs reworked contract, if he would bolt.

The thing is...Kovy mentioned at the presser that he was a devil for life.....what else would he say? I rather play in LA but the 20 mill extra made the decision easy?? People think his image will take a hit if he goes to another team, but i doubt that if he nets 50...(hopefully with Kopitar )

Its easy for Kovy to go back against what he said at the press conference

he signs with the kings, at the press conference just says 'LA was my first choice, thats why i flew out here to negotiate, the New Jersey offer was just too good to turn down however'

If he ends up playing for a team other than the Devils, what he said in that press conference will be forgotten by everyone by mid-October at the latest. That is, except in NJ.

That would cause a riot in NJ looking at thier boards... I would pay just to see the reaction of NJ fans if he goes to another team.

Like I said on the Devils board, Kovy can easily worm his way out of this.

A simple quote that looks like..

"I tried to make it work with the Devils but some unfortunate circumstances occurred and due to that and being that this is a business, I have decided to move on and sign with _______."

As a Devils fan, of course I am upset but deep down, we all knew this contract was a joke. Just try to put yourselves in our shoes and tell me you wouldn't be upset about it either. It's going to be very interesting to see where this goes. I still like the Kings though and will stay up late to watch Doughty reign over the Western Conference.
