August 9th 1988, Where were you?

I was on a camping trip in Oregon and couldn't believe the news when I heard it. I was only 9 but I couldn't wait to get back home and get the season started.

I was 15. My first instinct was to go to the sporting good store and buy a silver and black King hat-as soon as my parents could drive me there. Then I went back to playing Nintendo.

Apparently I got stung by bees a lot that summer while playing outside, so lets run with that. Needless to say, I was only 1 but I couldn't wait to get back indoors for some polysporin and get the season started.

Buying Season Tickets almost simultaneously with the press conference as my buddy who was Promotions Director for the Lakers called and told me that a memo went around right before the announcement that from the time of the announcement forward all comp seats (which I used to get regularly) were being pulled back and would no longer be available.

After the announcement, getting ****-Faced with my teamamtes and pissing ourselves thinking how awesome it was going to be to watch the best hockey player in the world at least 41 times a year (IIRC, Prime Ticket only broadcast a couple of games a year back then)

Aug 9th 1988 was my 5th birthday so I was totally oblivious to the trade. It wouldn't be till six years later that I discovered Gretzky and the Kings, but I always thought it was cool that he was traded to LA on my birthday.

I remember calling my dad at work and telling him we got Gretzky. He thought I was playing a joke on him.

I was at work and could not believe it. Then finding out we received McSorley and Krushelnyski too - That was the day I fell in love with the fat man. Edmonton gets Carson, Gelinas, 15 million, and 3 #1.

1989 J Miller played a total of 6 NHL games
1991 M Rucinski had a decent NHL career
1993 Stajduhar played a total of 2 NHL games.

... I was with my dad in the car, on the way home but stuck in near-gridlock, and we heard the news on KFWB while we were waiting for a traffic report.

This takes me back to so many memories. At the time of the trade, I was a child and we did not have cable at the time, so the only sport I followed was basketball since the Lakers were always on KCAL, channel 9.

I discovered hockey thanks to my classmates, and I immediately was drawn to Gretzky and started collecting hockey cards and memorabilias of Gretzky. Hell, I even made a poster of Gretzky in grade school. My only opportunity to follow the Kings was on KTLA, channel 5 and the handful of Kings games they would broadcast, watching Stu Nahan cover the Kings.

The only news outlets then were the local news and the LA Times. From time to time I'd get a copy of the Hockey Digest that would let me know about hockey transactions around the league.

I don't think we'll ever see a trade that would match the seismic impact that the Gretzky trade had on a single sport, team, city and an entire league.

I heard on the local TV news. It was the first thing ever shown on the new TV in my room I had saved up for.

No cable for us either. We lived in a section of Yorba Linda built right before it became normal procedure so they had to dig up the streets that summer to lay the lines. Turned out to be great timing, we finally get cable for Gretzky's first season with the Kings. And for you kids out there no cable means we had channels 2,4,5,7,9,11 and 13. No DVR, no internet, no cable, no dvds, no cell phones, we actually had to go outside and play sports for entertainment.

Really, In August, you getting ready? Wow, man 3 months before the playoffs, without "Wild Card" teams and you were getting ready, Damn you're good!

When will we be celebrating the Stanley Cup in LA?

Sincerely,

Barry Melrose
