2010 Cup Champs -- Philadelphia Flyers? Oh no.

Quote:
There's one difference between the Hossa deal and those of Pronger, Savard and Luongo. The latter three do not begin until this upcoming season, while the Hossa deal began at the start of last season. As a result, only the circumvention by the Blackhawks in the Hossa deal would have impacted NHL games.

If the League determines that the Hossa contract was in violation of Article 26 of the CBA, it would be fully within their power to strip the Blackhawks of all 68 wins -- 52 regular season, 16 playoff -- that they racked up in 2009-2010. Obviously, the Stanley Cup would go with them.

Now, this probably will never happen, but in line with the CBA and in line with the precedent set by Bloch's ruling, it could. And if it did, what would happen to the Cup? Would there just be no winner in 2009-2010, or would the runner up have claim to the title? Or would perhaps some other team -- the AHL champion Hershey Bears, perhaps -- have the right to a claim?

As a disclaimer, I'd never want this to happen, because A) it'd be a terrible way to end a 35 year Cup drought, B) the Blackhawks beat us fair and square and C) Hossa basically sucked in the Finals anyway.

We don't have access to the current agreement between the NHL and the Stanley Cup Trustees, who are the independent owners of the Cup. (The NHL does not own the Cup.) Unfortunately, we can only presume what would happen in this case -- it would like be solely up to the two Trustees, Brian O'Neill and Ian "Scotty" Morrison, who according to the Hockey Hall of Fame, "have absolute power over all matters regarding the Stanley Cup."
Obviously this would never happen. But imagine if it did? Oh boy I'd be ashamed if they gave us the cup just because of a contract problem. It's an interesting article though, knowing that something like this is in fact possible even though maybe .000001% possible. As fans we'd probably never hear the end of this, and I don't think anyone on the team would even want this cup per this circumstance.

Or they void Pronger's contract too and disqualified the Flyers, then declare Montreal as Cup Champions because they won one game in round 3 and San Jose didn't.

Montreal fans would have a parade and burn down the whole city....

ROTFLMAO

Would never happen, and I'd never want it to happen.

Especially since I want championships to be final. As in, can never be taken away.

A brillaint theory, but Pronger was still under the contract he signed in Anaheim, so he would have been eligible regardless. Hossa is the only one who falls into that category

Sorry but I can't agree with that, after watching Chicago celebrate on the ice, and have a parade. I want to see my team carry it around the ice, and ride down broad street with it, not just get their names on it.

It wouldn't be the same for sure, but it would be hilarious for Chicago to go through all that, and then have it all taken away from them.

if a player not on the game roster scores a goal, the goal stands, even if the refs realize after the goal or after the game what happened. i think the same sort of rule should apply here.

if this happens, it cheapens the cup, makes the league look like ****, and is generally just ********.

that being said, this isnt happening.

If it would come to this, it would probably mean the Cup would not be awarded at all. Even though I wish the Flyers won it in 2010, I would not want them to be awarded the Cup on a technicality. The league will not go for this anyhow. Think about the bad press and loss of reputation this would cause.

When I opened this thread I thought it was about The Hockey News picking the Flyers as Stanley Cup champions in their season preview last year. I believe they later retracted it or something when we hit rock bottom and were 14th in the east.

The Phantoms still deserved the Cup during the lockout year.

How could anyone want to take it? I felt bad enough about the Phillies winning the World Series in a 3 inning game. This would be awful.

I would rather they said there was no winner but at the same time the "what ifs" would piss me off till the day I died. The league is so ******** for not dealing with these contracts at the time they were signed.

The Flyers wouldn't win it. The Blackhawks would just have it stripped. I don't care what that article says. Just like in the NCAA when a team gets their title stripped the other team doesn't win it

How hilarious would it be if it was Hossa's fault and the Blackhawks were DQ'd?

It wouldn't happen, but this board would explode.

What if we found out after the fact that the entire Blackhawks roster was using illegal performance enhancing drugs and the whole team should have been ineligible to play. Shouldn't the Cup be taken away and awarded to the Flyers in that case? I present to you the jury, that Marian Hossa's cap circumventing contract WAS that performance enhancing drug.

Ok, so maybe not. Hossa's contract was valid for the 2009-10 season so I don't think you can go back, but you could administer punishment going forward.

The NHL's best option is to fine teams a formulaic amount of money for having these contracts on years remaining up to their stated 5 million dollars per season as stated in the CBA as a maximum fine. They could then remove draft picks as necessary.

Ex. Pronger's last 2 years are about $550,000, fine the Flyers $3,450,000 the approx difference between his contract and cap hit for the last 2 years.

Ultimately the NHL is dumb for not having the foresight in knowing this would happen, and they should've capped contract lengths, and set guidelines for the minimum % to total contract dollars that each contract year must have.

Just have Chicago give us their next 5 1st round draft picks for cheating us out of the cup.

K, thanks.

I agree with Chris. We deserve compensation. 5 first rounders would be alrite.

Unfortunately they didn't just cheat us. They cheated every team in the NHL in theory. So basically, they'd have to compensate all other 29 teams.

It just wouldn't work.
