Visiting Dallas/Fort Worth

Hey all! Devils fan coming in peace.
I'm going to be visiting the area from August 29th til September 5th and wanted to find out what I should see/do/eat etc. I know I'm going to the 6th Floor Museum, the Rangers game on the 29th, the TCU game at Cowboys Stadium on the 4th, and the Cowboys game on the 2nd.
I'll be renting a car so driving isn't an issue. And I enjoy getting a taste of the local culture.

Thanks in advance!

Well, most of Dallas culture is pretty generic IMHO, lots of shopping and restaurants. If you are up for the drive I would recommend a trip to Ft. Worth and checking out the stockyards for that good 'ol Texas experience. Being from McKinney I'm also partial to the McKinney Square.

If you're really looking for culture, including culture that would shock most around here, go out to the First Monday Trade Days in Canton (about 2 hours, which is nothing in Texas).

Coincidentally, we're looking into moving to McKinney, Tucker Hill actually. Any thoughts, reccomendations on the area? Things that we must see up there that would help convince us to move there?

McKinney is an odd combination of a city for being a Dallas suburb. It is one of the older cities in the area but also one of the fastest growing in the country for the last 3-5 years. My family moved to Stonebridge in 1994 and McKinney was only ~30,000 people, it is now well over 100,000 people. I've been away at school for a few years so I'll have to give you my impression of things when I left. Despite growing so much it still has a small community quality to it. If you are going to be checking out McKinney make sure you get to the square, it is a historic downtown that you can get to by going east at the Virginia/Louisiana exit. Just follow that for 1-2 miles and it will lead you right into downtown. From what I recall McKinney has more homes on the historic registry than any other town in Texas.

I wasn't familiar offhand with the Tucker Hill area, but when I googled it and saw the "trademark" frontporch homes I knew exactly where it was That is still an area that is growing quite a bit so it may feel a bit isolated now but rest assured the town will grow out to it. If you are into this sort of thing there are miles of hike/bike trails and stocked lakes in Stonebridge which is just a relatively short jot from where Tucker Hill is on 380. There is also townlake which is just off 75 infront of the High School and it has ~1 mile jog path.

I don't know if you have children or not but the schools in McKinney are excellent, at least the ones where your child would attend, some of the east McKinney schools are a tad shady. I graduated from McKinney High School and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I got a great education ( I would recommend AP classes to get the best teachers), was in music, played 3 sports. There is ample opportunity to be involved in whatever their interests are.

I know it sounds hokey but McKinney really is divided into an eastside/westside. Highway 5 is the dividing line. Eastside McKinney is not really somewhere I would want to go alone truth be told and in all the time I've lived in McKinney there have only been a few times I've been on the eastside.

The biggest downside I say that McKinney has is the infrastructure. Because it has grown so fast not all of the roads have caught up to the growth of people. If you going to be working relatively close to where you live than it shouldn't be a problem, but if you have a significant commute to Dallas/Richardson traffic is terrible.

McKinney certainly seems like a good place to me. Tucker Hill has some beautiful homes that seem perfect for us. For some reason, Tucker Hill uses Prosper's high school which looks awesome. We're used to traffic in NJ so that's probably light compared to what we have here. Do you know of any other developments similar to Tucker Hill with the traditional looking homes that we should check out?

What's the best place for BBQ in the Stockyards? Seems like there's a bunch to choose from. And what is there at Billy Bob's Texas? I've heard from a friend who's in town now that I have to go there.

It's like I tell my remaining family in Chicago when they pass through - "it's really not that interesting here..."

BBQ in Stockyards - Can't say as I usually venture outside the area but still in Ft Worth for: Angelo's or Smokey's. Dickey's and Red Hot and Blue (Memphis style) are the preferred chain style places I normally go to though since I work near both.

Don't know if you're a fan of Wine or not, but drive through Main St into old Grapevine. The local wineries usually distribute in a couple of places and the actual wineries within Grapevine usually do tours. The nicest owners/tour I ever had was a very small "backyard" winery in Burleson though - Sunset Winery. Beware of traffic on 121 in Grapevine during rush hour though due to construction.

The best beer in Texas (imo) is Southern Star, Shiner, Saint Arnold and Rahr. Only Rahr is nearby in Ft Worth though and have resumed doing tours now. You can sample all of these though at the Flying Saucer in Downtown Fort Worth which I suggest driving through at least.

If you have kids into finance/education, the US Dept of Engraving is in Ft Worth - one of two places in the US authorized to print all the nation's currency and does hourly tours. If you want to impress the wife/girl, book a reservation for dinner at Reunion Tower now.

As said before, lots of dining and shopping so not sure what exactly is expected from those passing through.

There are two that come time mind. One is in Stonebridge Ranch called Mayberry Park, I think that subdivision is completely built out so if you were looking for a new home it wouldn't be an option. That is still in McKinney though. The other one that comes to mind is farther down on 380 towards Denton in a town called Aubrey. The community is called Savannah and I am pretty sure Savannah is still building. Here is a link to it:http://www.savannahdfw.com/index.html

For BBQ it's not in the stockyards but I would recommend Railhead.
