So no matter how you look at it, it's just a horrible trade for Washington.
Sorry, Washington only lose out on Green. Iginla is an upgrade over Semin, Kipper is definitely an upgrade over Varlamov...Knuble/Poti/Fehr and all the other Flames are spare part.

But i said before deal makes more sense for the Caps since they probably just need a few pieces to win the cup....for the Flames, who the hell wants to rebuild with guy like Semin, Knuble and Poti?

Btw, Iginla really had only one bad year. That was last year when his center was injured and he had to play with a monkey called Jokinen.

not trying to trash you here, you bring up some very viable points with your explanation of the contracts which would make this a bad long term deal for the capitals. but really, wouldnt you make this deal if it guaranteed at least one stanley cup. which it would without a doubt
That last part in bold really ticks me off, as nothing guarantee's a stanley cup. Heatley was supposed to "guarantee" the Sharks the Cup, and it did them squat. Pronger was supposed to do the same for Philly. They made it close, but it looks like that "guarantee" didn't really work out did it?

As for the players, I would say Iginla and Semin are somewhat close in skill, with the nod going slightly to Iggy. Iggy is the much more complete player, and a fantastic leader. But I would take Green in a heartbeat over Regehr. And I'm pretty sure you couldn't get Green out of Washington for Regehr plus Calgary's next two 1st round picks. So it's not a complete upgrade at all.

But most imporantatly, you are completely ignoring the salary cap. Is Iggy an upgrade? Sure, but he costs more than Semin and his NMC immediately removes the potential of Washington moving him for assets if they want, which they can with Semin. Is Kipper an upgrade over Varlamov in skill? Hell yeah. No question at all. But as has been pointed out, the era of the $6 million goalie seems to be seriously in doubt, and while Kipper is great, adding his contract to a team that is already got nearly $17 mil wrapped up Ovie and Backstrom isn't going to help. Adding Iggy and Regehr with their contracts isn't going to help. Not when the Caps have to look at possibly re-signing Fleischman, Laichs, and Alzer after this coming season.

So yes, this is still a horrific deal for the Caps.

That's irrelevant. Have you ever heard of the salary cap? You might want to take a look at how this trade impacts Washington's cap situation.

I was actually hoping you'd ask Washington fans how it felt going up against an elite goalie like Jaroslav Halak. Or Penguin fans.

Langkow circa 06-07 is a very different player than today.

Not in a good way either.

It's relevant on your post when you said Iginla was only good 4 yrs ago....that was ignorant or at least uninformed.

I am not saying Wash has to make the deal the way it was proposed. My point is Iginla and Kipper has a lot of value to a team like Washington. Smart GM knows how to work the cap.

Ignorance technically means to lack knowledge.. Kinda the same thing

On a more serious note: I love this thread and everyone in it.

This instantly makes Washington a cup favorite. They get Iginla, who's leadership was proven at this year's olympis as still very strong. He led team Canada in goals and was instrumental when it counted (ie. he set up the winning goal for Crosby). They also get a true #1 goalie and and a premier shut down defenceman. All they are really giving up long term is Green and Varlamov.

Varlamov is unproven and Green's numbers are vastly inflated by playing with Washington's offence.

Edit: In short, Washington would win a cup. Semin would walk away in a year and Calgary's franchise would be absolutely devastated. How do you not call this a massive victory for Washington?

At least Calgary would get to draft top 3 for several years straight.

Thoughts?

Just one...

Why isn't the OP a GM already instead of wasting his talent here on HF?

Watch a Flames game once and a while instead of reading the stats sheet buddy. I haven't seen much decline in Iginla's play at all, and I watch every game. He had an off year statistically, but he's far form washed up.

Maybe caps fans were thinking: If Green stopped making bonehead plays in our own end, we had at least one good defensive defenseman and an elite goalie he'd have finished these Habs off in 5.

Again... watch a dam Flames game before pretending to know what you're talking about. Kiprusoff is basically Jesus in goalie pads and is the only reason Taylor Hall isn't playing with Iginla and Tanguay next year. If Kiprusoff was on Washington they would be in the Finals without breaking a sweat.

Kipper has a career average 2.44 GAA, and the Caps averaged 3.84 goals per game last year. Looks pretty damn scary to me, not to mention goalies don't age as quickly as players, especially elite goalies.
