Preseason hockey: Is it a waste?

So the Flyers preseason starts Sept 21st at the WFC against the Devils. They are going to play 8 preseason games in total. I think it's a bit much. Although the intensity of preseason games is basically like a scrimmage there is still ample opportunity in 8 games of contact hockey for injury to occur when games amount to nil. I think camp and NHL action is good for younger teams with a good amount of roster spots open but for the Flyers it's almost best they ask for a waiver from Bettman! Players like Timonen and Pronger (even though he's injured through camp) should play maybe 2 or 3 preseason games as a primer to the reg season. Otherwise, it's a waste although Leighton and Boosh who was horrible last year need to face as much rubber as possible to prove themselves. Just sayin.....

Having said this since I'm such a huge hockey and Flyers fan I still enjoy the nostalgia of preseason hockey..just not the practicality of it especially 8 CONDENSED games!

I'm just curious what other people get out of the preseason other than a hockey fix after what seems like a long hiatus from hockey even with the Flyers making it to the Finals??...

Shedule:

Sep. 21 vs. New Jersey Wells Fargo Center 7pm
Sep. 23 vs. Toronto John Labatt Centre (London, ON) 7pm
Sep. 24 @ Toronto Air Canada Centre 7pm
Sep. 25 @ Minnesota Xcel Energy Center 8pm
Sep. 28 @ New Jersey Prudential Center 7pm
Sep. 29 vs. NY Islanders Wells Fargo Center 7pm
Oct. 1 vs. Buffalo Wells Fargo Center 7pm
Oct. 3 @ Buffalo HSBC Arena TBD

It's most to get into game shape and work on mechanics against other teams.

By the way, if you're an STH and renewed early enough, you should have gotten an email where you can exchange the Devils preseason game for a regular season game, I assume to better seats than you have.

I've never had a problem with preseason hockey... gives them a chance to look at the youngsters and tryouts (betts last year), and lets them play a game or so outside of NHL rinks whiich is nice. Not nearly as frustrating or nerve wracking as watching NFL preseason

I still think 3 to 5 games max is enough for them to work on their game against the opposition. The rest can be worked on in camp and scrimmages.

I'm ok with it. If there were less games, it would just mean more sloppy play at the beginning of the year, and I prefer not to see that.

I think it's useful to give all the players, major and minor, time to get going and in shape.

I think with the small amount of games though in the NFL, preseason football is a waste. Reduce preseason games to 2 and make it an 18 game season, with an added bye week.

Guys like Richards, Carter, Timonen, etc only play 4-6 of the games anyway and don't get a ton of ice time. You need to get the feel of a game back and 4-5 games is good for that but they also need to get some rookie and AHL guys some time to show what they can do also which is why they need more than just 4-5 games. I do think those 8 games should be in like a 10 day span to shorten the preseason and start the regular season by oct 1 at the latest and end the season 2 weeks earlier. A game every other day is perfect since guys don't play every game anyway.

I'd rather them figure out whats going on in games that don't mean anything. Plus we get to watch hockey a few weeks earlier.

It's a waste simply because they don't play full rosters (at all), and it's all still a mess the first 20 games or so of the season.

I don't think it is a waste but I think they could cut the schedule in half. Most of these guys are world class athletes who train all year round. After training camp and about 4-5 warmups, I would imagine that they are as ready as they are gonna get. No need for 8-9 games or however many they are playing.

It's not a total waste...it should just be shorter. The NFL is attempting to trade pre-season games for regular season games...NHL may have to copy that.

IMO preseason is just for people to "get their ice legs" back before the season starts.

Preason itself is good in concept, but puts your players at risk for injury before the season even starts. I think they shouldn't do it.

Enormous waste of time. The expanded pre-season schedule has nothing to do with game shape or team chemistry but rather it was entirely borne out of greed and economics. Paying 300 for a pair of platinum seats at the ACC in September is borderline idiotic and offensive. Start the camps earlier, reduce the Pre-season (scrimmage) games down to 2-3 and finish the playoffs in May.

That being said, is it September yet?

That's cuz the NFL is greedy... NFL should just drop a couple games. Or, possibly, just have some preseason games that are JUST guys trying out. Biggest problem in the NFL is injuries.

I think 8 pre-season games are abit too many, 3-5 should do just fine. But it's really good that they play 'em.
