Questions about Boogaard

I meant to post this when he was signed (and if there's another thread from another Rangers' fan, I apologize, couldn't find), but here it goes:
  • Can he play more than 5 minutes a game?
  • Does he injure people/dirty hit on purpose?
  • Is he a good presence in the locker room?
  • What are your pros/cons about him?
  • Could he beat a mountain lion?

I mainly know that he was a fan favorite and after seeing some youtube highlights (i.e. hit on Bourque), it got me really excited. The guy is an absolute MONSTER!

The problem for the NYR is that the past few years, teams (especially division rivals) would take runs at Lundqvist and other players, with little retaliation from teammates.. the exceptions are Callahan and Dubinsky, mostly, but seems like having the intimidation factor alone with Boogey in the lineup, would be a positive.

There was a thread about him already, but I can't seem to find it either...

Anyway:

* Can he play more than 5 minutes a game? Not unless you REALLY like goals against. He's a liability, plain and simple.
* Does he injure people/dirty hit on purpose? Nuck fans always claimed he would hit with a raised knee. Personally, I'd say no. But when you're that big... A "big" hit is just that much bigger, regardless of intent.
* Is he a good presence in the locker room? I've never heard or read anything negative about him in the locker room. But I have heard that he's usually quite quiet. So he's in all likelihood a pretty passive influence.
* What are your pros/cons about him? Pros? Wait... He has pros? In all seriousness... If he's healthy, he is a fantastic fighter, and that's it. Cons? Oh boy... He's a liability on the ice, he's a terrible skater, he will get a LOT of phantom penalties called on him by virtue of him being big, he will far too seldom draw any penalties himself, he's the most offensively useless player in the NHL (longest active pointless streak)... Ugh, I could keep going, but you get the idea. 99% of Wild fans are glad he's gone.
* Could he beat a mountain lion? On ice, yes. In the wilderness, I'd give the edge to the mountain lion.

If he's healthy, he's still a great enforcer. But that issue is multi-fold. Enforcers are dying out, and he's more and more rarely healthy.

He'll be a fan favorite, by virtue of a handful of big hits a year. But he's a really bad hockey player, who was an active detriment to our success, I can only assume he'll be the same for you.

Edit: ah.. of course Jarick finds it. I'm fairly certain we all basically said the same thing anyway.

Meh, goals, points... He's worthless in any case. I just got my stats mixed up.

i wouldn't hold my breath on that one

but as long as he beats people up, NYers will love him. I think he'll have his reigns loosened so who knows what could happen, though. Liability? Who cares--no one plays defense in the East anyway. (except new jersey)

I have a habit. I save the DVR'd copy of the last game of the season to watch on August 16th.

That game was probably the best example of why Boogaard is better off gone for most Wild fans.

During the first period, Boogaard lays a solid (and clean) hit on a Dallas player. Ott comes in and cross-checks Boogaard in the face. Boogaard attempts to get Ott to man up for it, but Sutherby jumps in as the third man in.

Penalties:
05:19 MIN Derek Boogaard : Misconduct (10 min) - 0 min
05:19 DAL Brian Sutherby : Misconduct (10 min) - 0 min
05:19 DAL Steve Ott : Cross checking - 2 min

Nothing Boogaard did (hit replay about four times to see the ensuing scrum) warranted a 10 minute misconduct. Sutherby should have been tossed, and Ott should have gotten more than two. Objectively.

But because Boogaard is Boogaard, he sat for 10 minutes. Ott gets off with two.

NHL officials are not devoted to east or west or divisional games. Rangers games will occasionally be ref'd by LaRue, Watson, or (I forget the third, MacCreary maybe?). In particular, pay attention to games where Boogaard is on the ice and Watson is your ref for the night. Boogaard will probably only get 2 or 3 minutes of ice time that game.

highly doubtful when that division is more stocked with goons than any other in recent history. they'll all be playing the same game. at the very least you'll see even tossings of players so he won't be any more of a liability (in losing a player off the bench) than his peer from the opposition.
