Panthers sign LW Andrew Peters

Quote:
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms with LW Andrew Peters on a one-year, two-way contract.

Peters, 30, has appeared in 229 NHL games with Buffalo (2003-09) and New Jersey (09-10), registering seven points (4-3-7) with 650 PIM. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound winger paced New Jersey with 93 PIM last season. Peters recorded a career high 151 PIM with the Sabres during the 2003-04 campaign and led the American Hockey League with 388 PIM during the 2001-02 season.

“With the addition of Andrew, we immediately add a physical presence to our line-up,” said Tallon. “He brings an aggressive style of play and a dimension that our team needed to address this offseason. We look forward to his contributions to our club.”

The St. Catherines, Ontario native was drafted by Buffalo in the second round, No. 34 overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Another Rochester move?

Since he's on a two-way, as likely if not more that he's headed to Rochester than Sunrise.

Huge upgrade over Tarnasky in the toughness/fighting department as far as I'm concerned...

Found these two things interesting about Peters.

Peters has been known as a great locker room presence, as well as a good guy off the ice. In Buffalo, he worked for numerous charities. In 2008, Peters would tend bar at the Pearl St. Grill and Brewery during the summer with all tips going to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Peters and his wife also did work to promote the Family Justice Center of Western New York, which works with women who have been victims of domestic violence.

While on the Rochester Americans, Andrew got into an on-ice fight with his brother Geoff Peters. Andrew has stated in interviews that he didn't know it was his brother that he was fighting.

For a short time, both Andrew and Geoff played for the same team (Rochester Americans). During one game, Andrew and Geoff collaborated on a goal. Andrew received an assist while Geoff was credited with the goal. During his time in the AHL, Peters led the league for most penalty minutes at 388.

Wow, so he wouldn't accept a two way from us last year. But he'll take one with you guys.

Seriously, he sucks. Trust me, there's a reason Lou Lamoriello used his first ever buyout on Andrew *** Peters.

Great guy though, really nice and if any of you get a chance to meet him, go and say hello to him!

Great. Another in a long line of enforcers to be underused and underutilized. At least our coaching staff will make sure he keeps the bench warm.

Good move. I was hoping he would go to FLA and perhaps see some time in Rochester, too. He's a top notch locker room guy and a bona fide Heavyweight.

At least this year DeBoer won't be able to get away with it now that he will be answering to Tallon and he is only under contract for this season.

Another good deal, because it's another 1 year deal, and it adds much needed toughness.

We need some strength and grit against some of the eastern teams, so he'll likely start in Rochester and get the call up for games against Philly and the likes. DB doesn't seem to like using the enforcers though, so it should be interesting.

If by "present" you mean, "here you go Flyers, another guy to beat up", then yes. Peters is one of the worst pound for pound fighters of all time.

Peters is an awful fighter, but by all accounts he's a great guy to have in the locker room. A perfect vet to put in the AHL IMO--he's got a strong work ethic and would probably be a good influence on the young prospects, even if he sucks as a hockey player.

I'm very happy with this signing. I know he's not going to provide any real important statistics to us, but at least now we have a known enforcer that we can depend on in those games against tough teams like the Flyers. I've always acknowledged him being a team leader as he was a big fan favorite in Buffalo, and I'm sure he will become one down here as well. Although, with DeBoer, I'm not sure how much ice time he'll get or how often he's called up.

hey guys stop the hate!! to be honest we have zero big strong forwards like him. i think he's an upgrade in terms of physicality from mcardle. lets give him a chance on OUR team and judge him after that

I don't think he'll more ice time than Big Mac as some are hoping. He sits more games than he plays and averaged something like just over 5 minutes a game. I'm thinking he'll be spending most of the season with the Amerks.

And if DeBoer refuses to play an enforcer, then I hope Tallon realizes DeBoer shouldn't be the future coach of this team. I also hope Tallon takes note that our coach already ran off Belak and MacIntyre.

I think PD's issue with enforcers is the fact that our group of forwards are so offensively challenged he needs every guy on the ice to contribute. What he needs to think is my offensively challenged forwards will score more if they aren't afraid of getting destroyed every night because the team is as soft as a roll of charmin. Hopefully Tallon helps him with this.

Would much rather we have Asham, not sure that he'd come here, though. Not a good fighter and not a whole lot different that Mac, though he probably has more actual hockey skill. Still, not sure why we didn't just keep Mac.

Just looked through Youtube, only guy he beat was Kip Brennan with a KO. He did well enough against Brash, Neil, Orr, and Hordi, but...
