I understand your problem--but given the choices, it's pretty clear it's Del Zotto's job to lose (at least at even strength and on the powerplay--the penalty kill is another story, I don't think he'll start the season off on the second pair there).

i just dont like the idea of MDZ playing with anyone other than Marc Staal to be totally honest. He was just a cluster**** in his own zone....great offensively, but horrendous in his own zone.

The next best choice might be MCD, but 2 kids on 1 pair? that might be kinda rough.

Not possible, they're both left handed, left defenseman. it would be pretty disastrous switching either one of them.

Right handed dmen can occasionally play their offside, but almost never the opposite.

That's for 1 shift, 90% of which is in the offensive zone. it's a completely different story in your own zone 5 on 5..

This is the Del-Zotto-Girardi pairing. If MDZ shows that he is not capable of top 4 minutes, then that will be very disappointing and we will probably have to make a trade during the season for another dman.

to me its not about how many minutes hes playing, its about who hes playing with. Im not sure Dan Girardi is good enough to cover for his mistakes...but we need MDZ out there a lot.

possibly...i wouldnt know. im a right handed playing defenseman and i really dont care which side i play on...i like the right since i find it easier to keep the puck in along the boards...but other than that, it doesnt really matter to me...not sure why being left handed changes it so much *shrugs*

The thing is I don't think you want to mess with a young player while they are still learning the position on the fly in the NHL. One of the biggest problems this organization has had is playing players out of position. Del Zotto is very young in a lot of ways and it doesn't make sense to have him learning what it takes to be a solid all around defenseman and playing out of position. Especially given his shortcoming at even-strength last season.

The organization pretty much has no choice but to have Girardi playing in the top four on defense (I'm not saying it's a bad thing--Girardi is capable of it). If Del Zotto makes so many mistakes that Girardi can't cover for him, I think the problem is with Del Zotto, not Girardi and having Del Zotto playing that many minutes will need to be reconsidered. And that's a problem I hope the Rangers don't have to face.

Gotta be MDZ/Girardi. I want Girardi with Staal though.

Eventually, MDZ has to be able to play with someone lke Girardi, or he'll never be much more than a Marc-Andre Bergeron type of player. It's not like Girardi is like Green who has no idea of playing defense. If MDZ can't play with overall solid guys like Girardi, he'll never be a top-4 defenseman.
